STARTING YOUNG
11 June 2006 - Intermot Muenchen
The earlier, the better for up-and-coming racers
Motor sports have one thing in common with figure skating, skiing and gymnastics: It’s virtually impossible to become a champion unless you start at a very early age. Today, there are more opportunities to do so than ever before. Youngsters can enter street races and supermoto races or try their hand at trials and speedway, enduro or motocross competitions. At INTERMOT Cologne, the international trade fair for motorcycles and scooters (11th to 15th October), parents can find out how their children can get involved in motor sports. World Champion Valentino Rossi won his first motorbike race aged just 12 — which should come as no surprise to motorcycle enthusiasts. And in the current MotoGP starters’ line-up, all of the competitors started their racing careers before they were old enough to get their motorbike licences. After all, experts agree that the earlier children get involved in the sport, the greater their chances of success later on. Even children as young as six can now try out bike sports. As in most types of sport, young motor sports enthusiasts are encouraged to join one of the many clubs that offer special courses, pick out new talent, and prepare riders for competitions. Most of these clubs in Germany are affiliated with the German Motor Sport Federation (DMSB), the German Automobile Association (ADAC), the German Automobile Club (AvD) or the German Motor Sport Association (DMV). Information for up-and-coming motorcycling enthusiasts is available on the websites of these organisations. The ADAC offers mini-bike taster courses on go-kart circuits, where experts guide the young participants through their first steps in motor sports in a safe environment. For course dates and details of how to sign up, see www.adac-motorsport.de. Children who enjoy such courses often then progress to inexpensive mini-bike and pocket-bike races. These are open to different age groups, and in the past they have produced racing stars such as Steve Jenkner and Sandro Cortese. What’s more, a large number of street races and off-road races are held for young competitors on “real” motorbikes. Further information is available on the websites of the motorbike manufacturers and the associations mentioned above, all of which will be exhibiting at the international INTERMOT trade fair for motorbikes and scooters in Cologne from 11th to 15th October. Here, the parents of up-and-coming bike racers will be able to collect in-depth information and find the answers to all their questions. INTERMOT Cologne — 11th to 15th October 2006
