SNETTERTON HOSTS BIKE RACING HERO READ
14 September 2006 - MotorSport Vision

World Champion returns to track for Race Of Aces

Seven-time Grand Prix motorcycle World Champion Phil Read will be the star attraction at Snetterton this weekend as the Classic Motorcycle Racing Club holds its annual Race Of Aces.

Read, who along with Mike Hailwood and Valentino Rossi is one of only three men to win World Championships in at least three different classes, will be competing against some of the country’s top club riders. Read will be riding a Paton, one of Italy’s most famous privateers from its long and successful Grand Prix history.

The ‘Prince Of Speed’ will also be taking part in a demonstration of some of the most famous Yamahas ever to compete in Grand Prix. As well as riding his 350cc machine from 1968, his son Phil Jr will be taking to Dad’s championship-winning 250 from 1971. A total of 13 bikes will be demonstrated, covering both the 60s and 70s and a total of five different classes. For fans of all things four-wheeled there will also be a Classic Car parade.

In total, over 40 races will take place over the two-day meeting, with an enormous array of bikes taking part from 50cc right up to 1300cc monsters! One of the legion of riders taking part is Gordon Russell from Hingham, very close to Snetterton. The former CRMC chairman has competed at his home track every single year for nearly four decades, and the World Endurance and Isle Of Man veteran will be competing on a Honda K4 in the Junior Twins and a 500cc Manx Norton in the Senior Group 1 class. At the recent Goodwood Revival, Gordon rode his Norton to a tremendous sixth place and was first of the non-works finishers, making him one to watch this weekend.

Meanwhile, Gordon’s son Mike will also be riding. The former CRMC champion will race a TZ Yamaha 350G, a slightly different machine than the 320 model he runs in the International Classic Grand Prix series. He’ll be up against friend and rival Vince Gedge from Wymondham who says that the CRMC’s FRC series is ‘the hardest form of racing he’s ever been involved with!’ There will also be an influx of continental riders and machines as the Union of European Motorcyclists (UEM) bring their Vintage Cup to Snetterton, with 20 riders predominantly from Scandinavia taking part in various classes. For a true festival of classic machinery for the bike fan, Snetterton is the place to be this weekend!

Race day tickets for the Classic Motorcycle Racing Club meeting at Snetterton will be available on the gate and are priced at £12. Children aged 12 and under are admitted free.
