ULSTERMAN WINS PRESTIGIOUS IAM ROAD SAFETY AWARD
09 October 2004 - Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists

The IAM, Britain’s leading advanced driving organisation, has awarded its prestigious Dominic Fox Award to an Ulsterman this year.

The Dominic Fox Award was named after a member of the IAM Council who died in 2000 aged just 32.

The 2004 Dominic Fox Award winner is Sam Geddis, General Manager at Adelaide Insurance in Belfast.

Sam has put in a great deal of work into the young driver initiative in Northern Ireland called Roadwise.

The award was presented at the IAM National Conference
in Wolverhampton on 9 October by Dominic’s brother, Nicholas Fox.

IAM Chief Executive Christopher Bullock said:

''Once again, in Dominic’s name, and with his family’s support, the IAM is pleased and proud to be able to acknowledge an outstanding contribution to road safety.''

Mr Bullock said that Sam, from Ballymena, has led the Roadwise project from its conception to delivery, culminated at an event last year, when he secured the backing and support of multi-national companies, motoring bodies, national media and the Government to make sure that the scheme was launched successfully.

Roadwise aims to cut the number of casualties on the roads of Northern Ireland, caused in the main by young, inexperience drivers. Using a combination of classroom discussions and on road driver training, drivers learn to spot and avert the dangers they face on the road. The Roadwise package includes reduced insurance premiums for successful delegates.

''When he was nominated, we were reminded that without Sam’s dedication and enthusiasm there would be no Roadwise. He has made the scheme a reality and continues to drive the scheme forward to ensure that young drivers in the province become safer drivers,'' said Mr Bullock.

As well as a specially engraved Armada dish, Mr Geddis received a cheque for £500 which he has agreed to use for pro bono training of Roadwise candidates.
