V-ROD MAKES UK RACING DEBUT
18 September 2004 - Harley-Davidson UK
Next Round - Santa Pod Drag Race 2 - 3 October 2004
Stadium Harley-Davidson is backing its very own V-Rod drag racer this season. Dave Jones, senior technician at the Chingford dealership covering north east London and Essex, is racing his specially modified V-Rod supplied by Harley-Davidson UK. And the V-Rod is getting off to a flying start. On its debut run at the famous Santa Pod track, the bike blitzed the quarter mile course in 11.01 seconds, and its second run saw Dave knock half a second off that time and take second place overall. But hitting these fast times has not been easy and it has taken a year to modify the bike. Dave has worked tirelessly to make the V-Rod the racing machine it is today. Changes include conversion to chain drive, lowering the suspension and modifications to engine and fuel systems. The bike has a custom-built 2-into-1 exhaust, modified swing arm, performance machined three spoke wheels, drag bars and custom made rear sets. Dave first started drag racing Harley-Davidsons in 1991, building and racing a Street Class Sportster which achieved a best quarter mile time of 10.7 seconds (the fastest in the UK). Dave Jones said: “I need to spend the rest of the season getting used to the bike really – after riding a Sportster every season since 1996 it’s a big change. However, I know that the new Revolution engine has vast potential and I’m looking forward to what we’ll be able to achieve with the V-Rod. Our next round is at Santa Pod on 2 and 3 October and I’m really going to put it through its paces!” Garry Knowles, manager of Stadium Harley-Davidson said: “Thanks to Harley-Davidson we have the opportunity to compete at the highest level. With Dave’s years of knowledge developing the Sportster and our commitment to the sport of drag racing I’m sure that we will see the Drag V-Rod at the very top of what is, after all, a street legal class.” Launched in 2001, the road-going version of the Harley-Davidson V-Rod has won over 30 major awards from the design industry and motorcycle press. The V-Rod’s combination of a powerful, liquid cooled V-twin engine and head-turning custom cruiser styling has made it one of Europe’s top-selling Harley-Davidson models.
