SAD NEWS
03 September 2006 - Fowlers of Bristol

Harold Charles Fowler, the co-founder of one of Europe’s biggest and most enduring motorcycle businesses, passed away on Sunday 27th August aged 94, following a brief illness.

Harold, or ‘Harry’ as he was better known to his peers, introduced motorcycles into his parents’ cycle and pram business, which started in 1926, beginning a family dynasty that continues to this day. Today Fowlers Motorcycles occupies a 40,000 square foot showroom in central Bristol, not only selling new motorcycles from leading international manufacturers including Honda, KTM, Piaggio, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha but also incorporating a major national parts and accessories wholesale division.

Harry was passionate about motorcycles. He was a well-known scrambler and trials rider in the ’forties and ’fifties, with many trophies to his name. Well into his eighties, he frequently arrived at business meetings on two wheels and was a much-respected figure in the motorcycle industry, thanks to his sound stewardship as Chairman of the company that bears his family name. Age was no barrier to this energetic man, who continued to work 6 days a week at the company’s headquarters, until 2 weeks before his death.

Harry’s belief was that “It’s a family business and very much the better for it.”

There will be a private family service at St. Bridget’s Church in Chelvey, near Backwell, on Tuesday 5th September. This will be followed by a motorcycle cavalcade, led by a Triumph hearse, to South Bristol Crematorium, past Fowlers via Temple Meads roundabout. Friends, colleagues and customers are welcome to join the procession riding a motorcycle, leaving from the church at approximately 3.30pm. Donations to Riders for Health at www.riders.org.
