BACK ON TOP FOR Q8 OILS AND AIRWAVES DUCATI
01 September 2006 - Q8 Oils
Airwaves Ducati dominated round 11 of the British Superbike Championship at Cadwell Park, finishing first and second in both races, leaving their riders first and second in the Championship standings at the end of the day too.
The team started in impressive form, with Leon Haslam setting the quickest ever lap of the Lincolnshire circuit to qualify first on the grid and team mate Gregorio Lavilla in second. Variable conditions on race day meant that tyre choice was to be crucial. In the first race both Leon and Gregorio chose intermediate tyres but both experienced poor starts. As the circuit dried rapidly, Haslam overtook Harris for 2nd place on lap 8, while Lavilla moved into 4th behind Rea. Leon then closed in on Kiyonari’s 7-second lead and passed him to take the lead, but Gregorio had his sights set on the top spot on the podium. The Spaniard passed Leon on lap 14 to take the chequered flag, with his teammate in second and Honda’s Kiyonari 14 seconds behind in 3rd place. In spite of continued mixed weather, both Airwaves Ducati riders took the bold decision to race on Dunlop slicks. The Ducati 999F06’s got better starts and repeated the first race result, but with Haslam and Lavilla swapping podium positions. However, the race was not without incident. Ryuichi Kiyonari, Shane Byrne and Karl Harris all crashed out and Gregorio Lavilla had to perform fantastic job of controlling his Ducati after the bike leapt sideways over the mountain on lap 16. Leon Haslam now leads the championship, with Gregorio just 15 points behind. Q8Oils has provided high performance synthetic lubricants to Airwaves Ducati since the start of the 2005 season.
