DOUBLE FOR AIRWAVES DUCATI
29 August 2006 - Airwaves Ducati
Airwaves Ducati achieved a perfect result at round 11 of the British Superbike Championship at Cadwell Park, finishing first and second in both races.
Gregorio Lavilla won the first race and Leon Haslam took the second leaving the Airwaves Ducati riders first and second in the Championship standings. Variable conditions at the Lincolnshire circuit meant that tyre choice was crucial and those decisions played a large part in the day’s results. In the first race Leon and Greg chose intermediate tyres but both experienced poor starts, this led to them having to fight their way through the field. On a rapidly drying circuit Haslam overtook Harris for 2nd place on lap 8 with Greg moving into 4th behind Rea. Leon closed in on Kiyo’s 7 second lead and Greg then went on to pass Leon on lap 14 to take the chequered flag for the teams first one, two of the day. Kiyo finished 14 seconds behind in 3rd place. The mixed weather continued for race two but both riders decided to race on Dunlop slicks. The Ducati 999F06’s got better starts and were looking to repeat the first race result. Their efforts were aided by Kiyo, Shane Byrne and Karl Harris crashing out. The Airwaves Ducati duo finished an excellent 1st and 2nd but not without incident; Greg did a fantastic job of controlling his Ducati after the bike leapt sideways over the mountain on lap 16. Today’s results mean Leon Haslam now leads the championship by 15 points from his team mate. With his second victory of the season under his belt Haslam is confident for the final two rounds, “It has been a fantastic day for us and I am really pleased with the result. The weather played a big part and it was a tyre decision, made as a team that has given us such a successful day. I am delighted to be leading the championship and I can’t wait for Silverstone; with double points at Brands it will be an exciting end to the season.” Gregorio Lavilla was pleased that he is back to his best saying, “Today has been good and I am so happy with my results. To get a win and a 2nd place is great especially as I don’t like this circuit that much! The bike is working really well so we are looking forward to the final two rounds of the championship as it is going to be very exciting for the fans.” Round 12 of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship takes place at Silverstone on September 17th.
