SPEEDWAY: NEWS AND FIXTURES 15.9.04
15 September 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association
ARENA Essex promoter Ronnie Russell agreed to stage the important Elite League clash between Peterborough and Oxford in the best interests of the sport.
He said: “We had a challenge match arranged and when I was approached to cancel and stage the Peterborough v Oxford match I gave it a lot of thought. “It’s such an important fixture to give a true reflection of the top five for the play-offs.” OXFORD chief Nigel Wagstaff inists he is putting all the club’s off-track problems to one side to focus on helping the Silver Machine into the play-offs. There are serious doubts over whether the club will remain in the top flight next season due to a lack of suitable racenight at their Cowley home. Wagstaff said: “I’m putting all my efforts into the team, I cannot do anything else.” ISLE OF WIGHT are celebrating after booking their place in the Jack Young Shield play-offs. The Islanders are looking good for fourth place after a 55-40 win over Reading, inspired by Ray Morton with a bumper 15+1 haul. The victory was made sweeter by the fact that they put one over former Islanders star Danny Bird, who quit the club during the winter. He was Reading’s top man with 15+1.
