SPEEDWAY NEWS AND FIXTURES 23.8.06
23 August 2006 - British Speedway Promoters Association
SPEEDWAY 1 MILDENHALL promoter Mick Horton has expressed serious doubts about the club continuing in the Premier League next season. Horton is concerned by low crowd figures and a lack of sponsorship which could force the Fen Tigers back into the third tier of the sport. Horton said: ''I would listen to sensible offers if someone felt that with fresh ideas they could make a go of it in the Premier League.'' SPEEDWAY 2 RYE House promoter Len Silver says he is withdrawing permission for Mildenhall to use Rockets asset Ben Powell. The two clubs clashed at West Row last weekend when Rye were prevented from tracking Powell because he was named in the Mildenhall squad. But Silver said: ''He rode for them in three matches and then they went with Jordan Frampton - and they never signed the paperwork to use Ben.'' SPEEDWAY 3 IT''S more than 30 years since Tommy Jansson lost his life in a track crash in his native Sweden but the memories of the former Wimbledon hero come flooding back in a brilliant new 240-page book produced in his honour. Publishers Retro Speedway, who have already produced acclaimed books on Simon Wigg, Malcolm Simmons and Eric Boocock, have now released an English version of last year''s Swedish book, TOMMY JANSSON: Legend Who Died Young. Produced with the full co-operation and input of Tommy''s family, the book charts Tommy''s rise from working class Eskilstuna rider to World class speedway star who was on the threshold of greatness before his life was tragically ended in May 1976, aged just 23. Apart from contributions from Tommy''s parents Joel and Inga-Lill brother Bosse and girlfriend Eva-Lotta, author Magnus Nystrom also gains a fascinating perspective of the former Dons idol from team-mates and rivals, including Anders Michanek, Bernt Persson, Bengt Jansson, Olle Nygren, Barry Briggs and Ole Olsen. You can order a copy of the Tommy Jansson book for £15.99 - POST-FREE in the UK from: Retro Speedway, 103 Douglas Road, Hornchurch, Essex, RM11 1AW (cheque payable to Retro Speedway).
