SPEEDWAY WEEKLY ROUNDUP AND FIXTURES - 22 AUGUST
22 August 2006 - British Speedway Promoters Association
ELITE LEAGUE LATEST. ARENA-ESSEX promoter Ronnie Russell expressed his relief as the Hammers ended their 19-match losing sequence with a 10-point win over Poole at Purfleet. Russell said: ''It was a superb meeting with some great racing and I am delighted to get off those 13 League points that we seem to have been stuck on for so long. ''It was a real team performance with each one of my side putting everything into their racing. The atmosphere in our side of the pits was brilliant and I would like to thank our guest Gary Havelock for his valuable contribution.'' BELLE VUE promoter Ian Thomas feels that a play-off spot is there for the taking for his team after a comfortable win over Oxford on Monday. Thomas said: ''I don''t like to predict things but I think we''ll make the top four now. I think the only thing that could knock us out of it is the possibility of a few rained-off meetings. ''Every meeting and every point counts now, there can be no giveaways. If we had lost against Oxford, then we could have been dead and buried.'' COVENTRY star Chris Harris was the Bees'' last-heat hero against Peterborough as he overtook Ryan Sullivan to secure the win - but he says the broken collarbone for Scott Nicholls is a massive blow to the team. Harris said: ''We need Scott in the team. He''s a good captain, a good leader and he also has the Grand Prix which we all want him to do well in. ''It was a meeting that had everything, but fortunately we managed to scrape through and take the two points.'' EASTBOURNE promoter Jon Cook praised the maturity of his young riders as the Eagles took maximum points from their South Coast deby with Poole. Cook said: ''Edward Kennett and Lewis Bridger never looked like over-riding. They were always in control and I think that was a significant step forward for Lewis. ''I was very pleased with the match as a whole. It is always nice to beat Poole and hopefully we can keep this kind of form until we come through to the Cup semi-final and the Craven Shield.'' IPSWICH star Kim Jansson says his recent revival is down to returning to his early-season set-up rather than further tinkering. Jansson said: ''At the start of the season we had a good set-up and things were going well, but then we started to mess about with the machinery and some of my meetings proved disappointing. ''Having gone back to basics I am now gaining the rewards, my bikes are going well and I am settled and organised.'' OXFORD promoter Aaron Lanney says he has learnt a lot from his first season in charge and feels the club can look to the future in positive fashion. Lanney said: ''I feel we have the nucleus of a very good side for next season. I know exactly where our strengths and weaknesses are, and hopefully I can address these issues. ''We are on the up now and we have had some good times at Oxford this season. I feel that the racing has been very entertaining and the overall atmosphere has been positive.'' PETERBOROUGH manager Trevor Swales has refuted the website suggestion of absent Pole Karol Zabik that the club have gone back on any arrangements between the two parties. Swales said: ''I wasn''t aware that there was anything he wanted that he hadn''t got, and in fact we had gone out of our way to help him. If that''s what Karol thinks, he has a right to his opinion - but I just wish he would tell us what the problems were. ''It''s a huge blow to the team, but it''s times like these that really test a team''s ability to respond.'' POOLE manager Neil Middleditch says that he describes himself as ''angry and frustrated'' at the Pirates'' recent run of defeats, where rider unavailability has played a big part. Middleditch said: ''We have been constantly disrupted by injury and illness to key riders and it is having a huge effect on track. ''These are trickly times but I assure every Poole fan that nobody is working harder behind the scenes than the management in making sure we get our season back on track.'' READING manager Jim Lynch has praised the guest riders who have stepped in to help the Bulldogs maintain their position at the top of the table. Lynch said: ''I seem to be a bit of a magician when choosing guests. Davey Watt against Poole, and Dean Barker and Todd Wiltshire the previous week have been tremendous for us. ''We have to thank them as they helped us out when we were struggling, and we need to keep things going now.'' SWINDON promoter Alun Rossiter is urging his side to take no notice of Peterborough''s indifferent record at Blunsdon ahead of the big match between the play-off contenders on Thursday. Rossiter said: ''I know Peterborough don''t have a good record at Blunsdon over the years, but they have enjoyed a wonderful campaign thus far and have a very good side. ''It will certainly be a competitive meeting and I shall be looking for another solid performance from the lads. Obviously to win is paramount, but it would be nice to get a good margin of victory if we can.'' WOLVERHAMPTON skipper Peter Karlsson felt his paid maximum against Arena-Essex represented a return to his form of earlier this season. Karlsson said: ''I was very happy with the bike, I felt a lot sharper and I wasn''t dropping the points which I seem to have been dropping lately. ''I''ve generally been happy with my form throughout the season but I feel a lot happier now and hopefully I can end the season on a high.'' PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST. BERWICK know that their forthcoming Bank Holiday clashes with Workington could have a crucial bearing on their bid to make the play-offs this season. Promoter Peter Waite said: ''It''s very tight indeed for what is likely to be the last play-off place. Only a couple of points separate a handful of teams and they will all be looking to qualify.'' EDINBURGH chairman Alex Harkness says he is encouraged by the signs he has seen so far from recent signing Daniele Tessari. Harkness said: ''We are getting more out of him than we expected. He is not afraid to get stuck in at the first corner, and we signed him for the long term.'' GLASGOW are making plans for a special 60th Anniversary meeting in September, which will feature Tigers riders of past and present. Co-promoter Alan Dick said: ''We will be doing our utmost to not only bring some talent to the main meeting, but we are really looking to invite as many former Glasgow riders as we can.'' ISLE OF WIGHT manager Dave Croucher says that his team''s home form in particular gives them a good chance of extending their season with a play-off place. Croucher said: ''We have run into top form of late and we fear no side, especially around our home circuit. I''m confident we can do the business.'' KING''S LYNN manager Rob Lyon is looking to take maximum points from two home matches at the Norfolk Arena this week. Lyon said: ''That will push us right back up there and set us up for an exciting end to the season. The League is much tighter than I ever anticipated.'' MILDENHALL promoter Mick Horton says that the club will have no option but to return to the Conference League next year unless crowd figures and/or sponsorship levels improve. Horton said: ''At this present time, there will not be Premier League speedway at Mildenhall under my promotion in 2007, but should there be pledges of sponsorship or an upturn in crowd numbers, then I will look at it again.'' NEWCASTLE will have to ride home meetings on consecutive nights at Brough Park next month after suffering their seventh home postponement of the season on Sunday. The Diamonds'' clash with King''s Lynn was their latest to be washed out, leaving them five home matches to fit into the four weeks before the deadline. NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone was unhappy with his side''s 23-point defeat at Somerset last week and is looking for a big response in the return fixture on Sunday. Stone said: ''Certain riders were well below their best on Friday and I will be looking for a much better showing. We need to get it right and win our local derby at home.'' REDCAR reserve Daniel Giffard has paid tribute to skipper Gary Havelock, who he says has played a big part in him showing the best form of his career. Giffard said: ''Havvy has given me a lot of help. He has got a lot of time for me, and I can ring him for advice or stay at his house whenever I need to. I''m sure I''m experiencing things now that he did when he was my age.'' RYE HOUSE have signed former Berwick rider Lee Smethills as a replacement for Ross Brady, who could be out for the rest of the season. Brady was forced to pull out due to dizziness at the Isle of Wight, the legacy of a crash at the end of July, and has been advised to take a lengthy rest from racing. SHEFFIELD co-promoter Neil Machin says the Tigers will go into next week''s Premier Trophy Final against King''s Lynn as the underdogs. Machin said: ''They are the strongest team in the League right now and they''ll start the Final as favourites, but that''s fine by us. Anything can happen and both sides will be wound up for it.'' SOMERSET boss Mick Bell says the Rebels are well on course for a play-off spot as long as they keep up their form over the next month. Bell said: ''The play-offs remain our target and we''re well placed to do that, but we need to continue picking up points to ensure we do finally get there. There''s going to be some very interesting meetings ahead.'' STOKE star Paul Thorp said he had done his talking on the track with his paid-13 point haul against Workington, the club which dropped him earlier in the season. Thorp said: ''I can''t deny I enjoyed it, and maybe I did have a point to prove. But the important thing was the team winning.'' WORKINGTON promoter feels that new signing Alan Mogridge will quickly get up to speed with the Comets as he seeks to finish his career in style. Drury said: ''Moggo is very excited about the move and I''m sure it will work out well. I have a positive feeling about it and he will certainly prove to be a much better option than rider-replacement.'' FIXTURE PICTURE.
