AN ACE DAY FOR KILLSPILLS
16 September 2004 - MAG UK

MAG congratulates the Killspills team who organised Saturday''s run to Parliament to hand over a petition protesting at the continued spillage of diesel on our roads.

Police cooperation was excellent, with all lights and roundabouts controlled to allow the 750 + bike convoy to proceed smoothly across the capitol.

The riders gathered at The Ace Cafe on London''s North Circular Road from where, after a police briefing, the convoy made its way through the West End, dropping off a small contingent in Whitehall to hand in the petition while the main body of the run continued to Millbank to park. The size of the convoy was such that bikes were parked all the way from Lambeth Bridge back into Parliament Square alongside the Houses of Parliament.

Many MAG members from around the country took part in the ride with one member of MAG Netherlands coming all the way from Holland to take part.

MAG President Ian Mutch commented; ''It was a great effort all round and we have every chance of winning on this one as there is no lobby that actually opposes us, we just need drivers to be more careful. Drawing attention to this issue helps to balance the lopsided view that riders are always to blame for the accidents they''re involved in. It is a reflection of the trust in the orderly behaviour of bikers that we were allowed to park in large numbers in such a politically sensitive area.''

MAG has campaigned on the issue of diesel spillage for over ten years and has promoted modifications to the EU regulations on diesel tank construction which we believe has helped but not eradicated the problem. The Killspills team have focussed on the issue of the personal responsibility of drivers to ensure that fuel caps are secure and tanks not overfilled which is the other crucial angle on
this problem. MAG have printed thousands of stickers which riders are invited to put on diesel pumps with garage owners'' permission.
