BIKERS LIVES SAVED BY DEVITT STAFF
26 August 2006 - Devitt Insurance Services Ltd
Insurance professionals know only too well the risks associated with riding a motorcycle.
That’s why staff from Romford-based motorcycle insurance broker Devitt have decided to do something about it by actively supporting First Bike on Scene™ (FBoS) and putting eight members of staff, six of whom ride motorbikes, through its training course. FBoS has been developed by the Lancashire Ambulance Service and teaches bikers how to assist fellow motorcyclists when they are the first bike to arrive at the scene of an accident, helping to save lives and reducing the potential for permanent disability. The course is approved by The Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh which makes it distinct from other courses of this nature. Chris Bottle, Head of Marketing for Devitt said: ''Working in motorcycle insurance we see an awful lot of accident statistics and hear a lot of sad stories. As many of us are bikers ourselves, we want to raise awareness of First Bike on Scene training and support its development. This is something bikers all over the UK should know about. We hope our support will provide a significant boost to the programme’s own promotional activity and will demonstrate its true life-saving value to the biking community''. Devitt are also supporting FBoS by assisting with the production and printing of promotional literature, donating goodie bags for promotional events and providing ongoing help with PR activity and online promotion. The FBoS course takes around six hours and begins with the hypothetical arrival of a motorcyclist at the scene of an accident. The training then covers: · How trauma and injury affects the victim of an accident · Protecting the scene and snatch rescue (when a casualty needs to be moved if in imminent danger due to their location) · Introduction to Basic Life Support · How to prevent further injury to a motorcyclist''s spine · How to remove a crash helmet safely – (When you need to do this, and if you do remove it, to use the same method that a paramedic would use) The course was taught by FBoS trainer Andrew Sullivan, a State Registered paramedic and a qualified ambulance instructor. He is also North West Ambulance Commercial Education and Training Manager. Raising awareness of the programme is high on Devitt’s agenda which is why Emily Crawford, Policy and Campaigns Officer from the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) joined Devitt staff for the training. Emily said: ''It''s unfortunately true that, mile for mile, riders remain 40 times more likely to be killed than car occupants. Early medical assistance in the ''golden hour'' following a crash is important to reduce the impact of injuries and increase the likelihood of survival. Although I don''t ride a motorbike, first aid courses like these are really useful in case I need to help someone who does.''
