WOLVERHAMPTON SPEEDWAY: MATCH REPORT
17 August 2006 - Wolverhampton Speedway
Elite League: PETERBOROUGH 47 WOLVES 42 PARRYS International Wolves were within three heats of a major upset at the Showground on Thursday - but the Panthers'' race-winning supremacy told in the end. A paid maximum from Hans Andersen and four heat wins from Niels-Kristian Iversen proved just enough for the home side who lost Karol Zabik after a Heat 2 crash and also had Ryan Sullivan below-par. With Zabik already out with a groin injury, Richard Hall came to grief on the first bend of the re-run of the reserves'' race, and Wolves gratefully accepted a 5-0 to get off and running. Wolves made light of the wet conditions early on and opened up a seven-point lead, the highlight being a brilliant second place from Christian Hefenbrock in Heat 5 as he teamed up with skipper Peter Karlsson for a 5-1 over Sullivan and Iversen. The home side met with more misfortune in Heat 7 as race-leader Sullivan stopped on the last bend, turning a 5-1 into a 3-3 and keeping Wolves three points up at that stage. Fredrik Lindgren fought hard to split Iversen and Sullivan in Heat 9, and Hefenbrock again did his bit to maintain the lead by holding off Hall for third place in Heat 11. The gap narrowed with a home 4-2 in Heat 12, Ronnie Correy passing Hall on the outside, but Peterborough finally went in front with a 5-1 in Heat 13 from Iversen and Andersen. Iversen then overtook Billy Hamill to win Heat 14, the Panthers'' 4-2 putting them five points clear and virtually home and dry before Andersen rounded off his paid maximum in the last race. PETERBOROUGH: Hans Andersen 16+2, Niels-Kristian Iversen 13, Richard Hall 7, Ulrich Ostergaard 6, Ryan Sullivan 5, Karol Zabik 0, Jesper B Jensen r/r. WOLVES: Peter Karlsson 10, Billy Hamill 9+1, Magnus Karlsson 8+1, Christian Hefenbrock 4+2, Ronnie Correy 4+2, Fredrik Lindgren 4, Trent Leverington 3.
