SECOND RACE POINTS FOR KIRKHAM A point scoring result in the second race was just reward for Jon Kirkham and the Scuderia Stellare team after possibly the toughest weekend in the small team’s short history. Having missed the Oulton Park round of the British Superbike Championship due to a shortage of parts for their Suzuki GSX-R’s coupled with a sponsor falling through at the last minute ‘team star’ were looking forward to returning to action at the North Yorkshire circuit in conjunction with Dienza Performance. With the decision taken to run the same Kawasaki ZX-10’s that Kirkham campaigned with the Dienza team last season Kirkham settled down to business during practice and qualifying. Following a number of technical problems the young Derbyshire rider eventually set a time just outside the top 20. The first race on the Sunday was held in cloudy but dry conditions with rain threatening. Not making the best of starts Kirkham battled his way through the first race with a series of mechanical issues hampering his progress. Speaking after race one team spokesperson Chris Johnson said he had never seen Kirkham try so hard. “You could tell that Jon was giving it everything and I’ve never seen him so on the limit. Unfortunately, there were a number of issues with the bike underneath him and no matter what he did he wasn’t able to make any real progress.” Race two brought with it rain and lots of it which acted as a great leveller for Kirkham and Scuderia Stellare. Kirkham made a better start chasing down Bridewell then Howarth. Keeping his head while a number of riders fell he eventually finished a well deserved fourteenth. Johnson said it was a gritty performance. “All things considered Jon did very well this weekend. The rain brought everyone back to us a little and he was able to compete with them on sheer ability. We’ll take stock now and start preparations for Cadwell.” The next outing for Scuderia Stellare and Jon Kirkham is at the Cadwell Park circuit in Lincolnshire on the August Bank Holiday weekend.
