FAULTLESS RIDE AT CROFT
16 August 2006 - Q8 Oils

The Airwaves Ducati riders and bikes performed faultlessly at Croft to deliver three podium places and Leon Haslam’s first win of the 2006 season, bringing him to within 3 points of the championship lead.

Gregorio Lavilla coped admirably with the British ‘summer weather’ to notch up two 3rd place finishes and 32 crucial championship points, keeping him in touch with the title.

Following a poor start in race one, Haslam recorded a new lap record of 1:20.508 on lap 16 whilst chasing his team mate but he was unable to pass him and the Airwaves Ducati riders had to settle for 3rd and 4th places, with the Hondas of Kiyonari and Rea clinching first and second.

Prior to race 2 the rain poured down and the teams prepared for their first full wet race since Donington Park. Gregorio moved into 3rd from the start but Leon fell to 11th place. However, this was to prove a race dominated by two riders. Karl Harris rode a textbook wet race, stretching out a seemingly insurmountable lead of 8 seconds by lap 11, but Leon was undaunted. By lap 6 he had moved up into 4th place, passing the acknowledged wet weather expert Michael Rutter in the process, followed by his teammate on lap 12, propelling himself into second. Leon closed on Harris by a second every lap, entering the final lap just 1.4 seconds behind. Leon then recorded the fastest lap of the race, overtaking the Honda on the penultimate corner to take the chequered flag and his first win of the season.

A delighted Leon Haslam said after the race, “I really wanted that win and I am over the moon! I am really happy with the way I rode today and I am within 3 points now with all my favourite tracks still to come.”
