SENSATIONAL WIN AT CROFT
14 August 2006 - Airwaves Ducati
Leon Haslam got his first win of the 2006 season at Croft
In a sensational race two which saw him take the lead on the final lap having closed down a 9 second gap and close the championship title race to only 3 points. Gregorio Lavilla added to Airwaves Ducati’s successful day notching up two 3rd place finishes and 32 championship points. In race one Haslam slipped to 3rd from second on the grid and Lavilla from fourth to 7th. The Spaniard fought his way back up to 4th by the end of the first lap and the top four of Kiyo, Rea, Haslam and Lavilla soon pulled away from the rest of the field. The Airwaves Ducati 999F06’s battled it out for the final podium spot with Leon recording a new lap record of 1:20.508 on lap 16 whilst chasing his team mate but he was unable to pass and the 2005 Champion crossed the line for 3rd place. The rain came down heavily prior to race 2 and the riders prepared for the first full wet race since Donington Park. From the start Greg moved into 3rd and Leon fell to 11th place. But by lap 6 Leon had moved up into 4th place and again the top 4 riders started to pull away. With Harris stretching out a significant lead of 8 seconds by lap 11 Leon and Greg seemed to be fighting for 2nd and 3rd. However after Leon took 2nd place from his team mate on lap 12 he took a second off of Harris’ lead every lap until he was just 1.4 seconds behind him going into the final lap. Leon then recorded the fastest lap of the race in the chase for the top podium spot overtaking the Honda on the second to last corner to take the chequered flag and his first win of the season. With two 3rd places Lavilla was pleased with his weekend’s performance and happy for his team mates’ first win. “The conditions were bad today but I felt confident going into the last race as we had wet conditions at Donington and we did well there. I am pleased with how I rode today and with Cadwell, Brands Hatch and Silverstone ahead we can be confident for some good performances to come. I am pleased for Leon, he deserved the win today, he has been riding really well and it is great to see the Airwaves Ducati team finishing the championship strongly.” A delighted Leon Haslam said after the race, “I really wanted that win and I am over the moon! I am really happy with the way I rode today and I am within 3 points now with all my favourite tracks still to come so I am certainly looking towards the title. Cadwell, Silverstone and Brands suit the Ducati 999F06 and there is no reason why Greg and I can’t one-two every race from now and put the Hondas behind us on the way to the Championship title.” Team manager Colin Wright was quick to praise the teams performance today saying, ''The boys did a great job! Both Leon and Greg were disappointed after the first race but showed true grit and determination to perform so well in the second outing. The championship is building into an epic and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to the next round in anticipation. The team have enjoyed this weekend but there are 200 points available so there is still a long way to go.“ RACE ONE RESULTS 1) Ryuichi Kiyonari – HM Plant Honda 2) Jonathan Rea – Red Bull Honda 3) Gregorio Lavilla – Airwaves Ducati 4) Leon Haslam – Airwaves Ducati RACE TWO RESULTS 1) Leon Haslam – Airwaves Ducati 2) Karl Harris – HM Plant Honda 3) Gregorio Lavilla – Airwaves Ducati 4) Shane Byrne – Rizla Suzuki 5) Ryuichi Kiyonari – HM Plant Honda
