Elite League: WOLVES 46 OXFORD 44

PARRYS International Wolves took two crucial Elite League points against Oxford - but were taken right down to the wire by the second-from-bottom Cheetahs.

Oxford guest David Norris got the benefit of the most flying of starts to win Heat 15 but crucially Wolves already had a two-point lead so second and third places for Billy Hamill and Peter Karlsson were just enough.

A night of thrilling racing saw the lead change hands on several occasions, and the commitment of both sides was a fine advert for Elite League speedway.

Ex-Wolf David Howe was clearly keen to prove a point when he used the inside line to good effect to pass both Freddie Lindgren and Magnus Karlsson in Heat 7, and Oxford took full advantage with a 5-1 in the next race to go four points clear.

Hamill roared off in pursuit of Norris in Heat 9, finally nailing his opponent around the outside going into lap four and Wolves completed their comeback with their only 5-1 of the night in the next race - thanks to a strong defence of second place from Christian Hefenbrock over Howe.

But Oxford were not finished, Howe taking revenge over the German to win Heat 12 in a Cheetahs 4-2 which brought the visitors back level.

Peter Karlsson then came up with a lap of total brilliance to win Heat 13, first going under Wiltshire for second place and then switching lines to the outside to power around Norris and into the lead.

At 39-39, Wolves had the comfort of seeing Hamill on track for Heat 14, but the real battle was behind as Eric Andersson, William Lawson and Adam Skornicki disputed second place. Lawson couldn''t make it past Andersson but vitally he held off a subdued Skornicki and that ensured Wolves would lead into the decider.

Hamill appeared to almost have the run on Norris as they headed for the finishing line in Heat 15 but had to shut off right at the last moment - but it wasn''t enough to prevent Wolves from winning the meeting.

WOLVERHAMPTON: Billy Hamill 13, Peter Karlsson 12+1, Fredrik Lingdren 7+1, Christian Hefenbrock 5+1, William Lawson 5, Magnus Karlsson 4, r/r for Ronnie Correy.

OXFORD: David Norris 11, Todd Wiltshire 9+1, Eric Andersson 9+1, David Howe 9, Davey Watt 5+2, Adam Skornicki 1+1, Lubos Tomicek 0.
