UK RIDERS ON THEIR BIKES - NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE WEEK ROUND-UP
07 August 2006 - Motor Cycle Industry Association Ltd

Riders of all ages and abilities joined in the National Motorcycle Week fun and took to two wheels to participate in events taking place across the whole of the UK.

Dealers held open days, with ride-outs, refreshments, fund-raisers and special offers. Bigger events took place in London and Gloucestershire where Watsonian-Squire held an open weekend with the support of BikeSafe who ran free assessments.

BikeSafe also got on board and offered senior industry figures an assessment for Ride to Work Day. Honda, Suzuki, Piaggio and Watsonian-Squire and Norman Hyde took the challenge along with staff members from the Motor Cycle Industry Association.

Honda invited all riders at HQ to a biker’s breakfast and ran a promotional campaign in central London close to underground stations. Manufacturers took to two-wheels as Yamaha staff took an evening ride out down to the South coast.

A Royal Enfield sidecar outfit was taken advantage of and used by Butts Organic brewery in Hungerford to act as a dray for delivering beer.

The campaign was supported by the rider’s groups BMF and MAG. Other associations including County Councils, such as Cambridgeshire and Rutland, Road Safety Officers, Owners Clubs, police forces, BikeSafe and all of the riders who got on their bikes were invaluable in making the event a success.

Samantha Tyson-Evans MCI’s Press Officer said, “ This year the event has seen widespread support from a variety of associations and individuals. Radio 2 DJ, Johnnie Walker, got the week off to a good start with an announcement encouraging people to get on their bikes.

“The rest of the week featured activities that focussed on some of the key themes fun, freedom, flexibility and friendship. Safety was another important aspect that drove some of the events and we are looking forward to seeing an expansion in local activity next year.”
