SHEFFIELD SPEEDWAY
13 September 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association
TIGERS are one win away from the Jack Young Shield play-offs after beating Stoke 44-34 at Owlerton.
The meeting was cut short by rain after 12 races but the result stands with Stoke taking the aggregate bonus point. Both sides started without key men. Tigers’ plans to airlift Richard Hall in from a grasstrack meeting in Kent were dashed because with strong winds meant the helicopter couldn’t take off, meaning rookie Benji Compton was given his place in the team, while Stoke were without injured no.1 Paul Pickering. With the visitors clearly not fancying the conditions, Sheffield started strongly and opened up a 17-7 win after four heats, including two 5-1s from James Birkinshaw and Ben Wilson in the second and the from Andre Compton and Wilson in the fourth. Further maximums came from Andre Compton and Birkinshaw in heat 7 and from Birkinshaw and Wilson next time out, to open a 32-16 gulf and give Tigers the chance of the vital bonus point as they tried to overhaul a 62-30 drubbing in the Potteries in August. But two drawn heats stemmed the tide and when ex-Tiger Robbie Kessler won his heat 12 tactical ride, partnered by Paul Clews for an 8-1 it meant Sheffield’s hopes were over. TIGERS: R. Ashworth 11, J. Birkinshaw 10+1, A. Compton 9, B. Wilson 8+4, P. Thorp 4, B. Compton 2+1. STOKE: R. Kessler 12, J. Staechmann 9, A. Mogridge 6+1, P. Clews 5+1,T. Leverington 1, R. Grant 0.
