SECOND SUCCESSIVE OULTON POLE FOR HARRIS
11 September 2004 - Honda Racing
Karl Harris started the weekend at Oulton Park as he means to go on after notching up his second successive pole position at the 2.692-mile Cheshire circuit.
The 24-year-old goes into tomorrow’s race at the penultimate round of the British Supersport Championship with a 30-point advantage. Harris is determined to seal the series and claim his second consecutive title aboard the HM Plant Honda Racing CBR600RR this weekend. His nearest rivals – Jay Vincent and Michael Laverty – start the 12th round further down the grid in tenth and 11th places respectively. Harris simply needs to finish ahead of his adversaries to win the series with one round remaining. Yorkshireman Harris is renowned for being virtually unbeatable at Oulton Park after securing three British Supersport wins from his last three starts. He finished the morning qualifying session today in second position behind Honda-mounted Leon Camier, but the defending champion set a fastest time of 1:40.022 in the afternoon to put himself at the top of the Supersport class for the fifth time this season. Karl Harris: “As always, I am going out for a win this weekend. It was frustrating not to wrap the championship up at Cadwell Park, so I definitely want to do it here at Oulton Park. This is one of my favourite circuits and I always seem to go well here. I can probably still win the championship without winning the race, but for me, second is never good enough.” Qualifying times: 1. K. Harris (HM Plant Honda Racing) 1:40.022; 2. L. Camier (Honda) 1:40.062; 3. M. Llewellyn (Ducati) 1:40.482; 4. P. Riba (Kawasaki) 1:40.566; 5. T. Sykes (Suzuki) 1:40.583; 6. C. Crutchlow (Honda) 1:40.636; 7. P. Young (Honda) 1:40.820; 8. A. Coates (Suzuki) 1:40.831; 9. S. Andrews (Yamaha) 1:40.881; 10. J. Vincent (Honda) 1:40.955 Footnote: Red Bull Rookies Honda’s Billy McConnell was unable to compete at Oulton Park after suffering concussion as a result of a crash during Friday’s free practice session.
