SHORT DAY FOR WARREN
31 July 2006 - Aprilia
SR Off-Road Aprilia rider Sam Warren’s day ended earlier than anticipated following a massive 100mph crash in the second race of the British Supermoto Championship at the Teeside Autodrome that destroyed his bike and left the young Derbyshire rider badly battered and bruised.
It was the first time the track at Middlesborough has been used for Supermoto with Warren looking forward to getting out on the wide, fast and flowing circuit under sunny skies. His first outing during qualifying went well and despite a few minor problems with his SXV Warren recorded the third quickest time behind Iddon and Winstanley who were always going to be his two main rivals on the day. Team boss Mick Spencer said that the track was easily one of the best in the country. “This circuit is tailor made for Supermoto and we would rate it as being as good as many of the venues that are used in the World Championship.” The team were primed for the first race and the World Championship trio of Warren, Winstanley and Iddon didn’t disappoint as they all got off the line together. KTM mounted Winstanley was the first to flinch going down early in the race and it was then left to the two Aprilia riders of Warren and Iddon to duke it out with neither giving any quarter. The two then rode nose to tail for most of the race before Warren made the tiniest of mistakes which was just enough for Iddon to get by and snatch the win in the last few laps. In the second race Warren was baulked off the line and dropped to fourth but managed to get past Lee Jones before the end of the first lap. He then chased down Iddon and managed to get past him after he made a small mistake. Not long after and out of sight of the pitlane Warren had a massive crash at well over 100mph with the bike and rider coming into view as he cart-wheeled down the straight. Warren’s Aprilia SXV was destroyed in the incident and his leathers and helmet were also a write off. The impact was such that he suffered minor concussion and took no further part in the day’s proceedings which ended what had been another thrilling three way battle with his fellow World Championship rivals. Speaking after the incident Mick Spencer said they still weren’t sure what had happened. “Unfortunately the accident itself happened out of sight and we could only see the after effect. Our best guess is that Sam got into the rough stuff at high-speed and had a bit of a tank-slapper. Being slightly concussed Sam isn’t sure himself what caused it. The bike is a write-off but the main thing is that other than being a bit sore and sorry he is OK.” Warren is expected to be back to full fitness well before the next event for the SR Off-Road Aprilia team which will be the MotoGB British Supermotard Championship round at Pembrey, Wales on the August Bank Holiday weekend.
