HASLAM DOMINATES FREE PRACTICE
21 July 2006 - Airwaves Ducati

Airwaves Ducati rider Leon Haslam recorded the fastest time in both sessions at the 2.692 mile Cheshire circuit and looks very strong for qualifying tomorrow.

Gregorio Lavilla will be looking to make adjustments and improve on his times

In first practice Haslam held the lead for a majority of the 50 minute session setting consistently quick times around the technically challenging circuit. Haslam was the only rider to dip under 1 minute 36 seconds, recording a fastest time of 1:35.817. Lavilla was pushing hard to break into the top few places but was a second off of the leaders pace. He set a fastest time of 1:36.874 to finish in 5th position.

The second session was much the same for Haslam who settled into an early lead. He steadily lowered his times throughout the session breaking the 1 minute 36 barrier more times than anyone else. Having completed 27 laps Leon had set the quickest time of the day, 1:35.788, only 0.668 seconds off of the time he achieved when qualifying in pole at this circuit in April. Lavilla lapped 21 times recording a fastest lap of 1:36.826 to finish 6th.

After practice 2005 BSB Champion Lavilla commented, “I am struggling a bit which is not normal for us, something is not right and I need to work with my technicians to establish what it is. I am focusing on sorting out the bike as I need to improve a lot in practice tomorrow morning and be back on form for qualifying.”

With two 1st positions Leon Haslam was in positive mood saying, “I have been the quickest in both sessions today and I am really happy with that. I was pleased I was able to get a good run out on our Dunlop race tyres; I know that making a decision on which one to use will be crucial to my results but I was pleased with how they felt today. I still hold the fastest lap ever here so I am confident for a good performance in qualifying and I will certainly be aiming for another pole position.”

Qualifying for round 9 of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship commences at 14.45pm tomorrow, Saturday 22nd July.
