SIMPLER INSURANCE FOR EASIER RIDERS
28 July 2006 - Bikesure
''FREEDOM OF A BIKE, SAFETY OF A CAR, SECURITY OF BIKESURE''
Trikes on steroids for born-again bikers get cover on everything ''What a blessing is youth'', goes the old saying. ''And what a pity it''s wasted on the young''. Amen to that says Phil Reed of MBT Customs, the UK distributor of the German-made Rewaco marque of motor trikes.
With its superb build quality, phenomenal handling and iron road-holding, the remarkable Rewaco has become something an icon of the ''born-again biker'' generation. These are the men (and quite a few women) often over 40, who have rediscovered the joys of a good throb of metal between your legs! Many of them even saw Easy Rider when it first came out. And they have the disposable income to pay for power, quality, style and, above all, a great ride. These aren''t your average trike. Rewaco''s basic trikes start at £14,000, rising to £26,000 for the remarkable new Harley-powered HS6, a stunning sculpture finished in stainless steel, with built-in sound system and GPS. ''They run like a go-kart on steroids'', says Phil. ''They feel fantastic, but they really are easy riders - at any age! One of our customers was a world sidecar champ in the 1950s.'' To give you an idea of the sort of customer who beats a path to MBT''s door in Exeter, Phil says that many of them don''t come at all. A surprising number buy a Rewaco by credit card, sight unseen, he says. ''Its reputation goes ahead of it. They know it''s a good investment, as much as a great ride. It doesn''t depreciate''. With a stonker of a machine like this, you might think it would be a stinker to insure. Not so. Phil says that about 95% of his customers end up insuring with Bikesure. ''You might think it would be hard to find good cover, because many insurers think machines like these are big risks. Not so if you use Bikesure. They make it very easy for us, and they think our bikes and our customers are good risks. ''In 15 years I''ve never known a Rewaco to be stolen, for example. I think thieves would have a hard time offloading it if they did take it, and we fit Thatcham 2 security and advise on proper Sold Secure locks and ground anchors. I''ve only heard of two accidents - and in neither case was it the triker''s fault. Claims were sorted very quickly.'' Robert Balls of Bikesure says that the superb insurance and safety record of Rewaco machines means they are much easier to insure than equivalent bikes. ''For example, a 42 year old guy with 5 years no-claims and a £500 excess could pay under £330 a year for the top-line Rewaco HS6'', he says. Bikesure says it can insure virtually any trike, from the cheapest ''starter'' models to the finest Rewaco. And with advanced new models due in any day now at MBT Customs, it''s a service that Phil''s customers will continue to rely on. Phil observes that a remarkable number of his customers go abroad. ''When you''ve got your Rewaco underneath, you''ll think of any old excuse to tour!'' he says. ''Bikesure make that very easy, too. We can send our customers off knowing they are already fully covered for up to 90 days on the Continent, the Green Card has already been sorted in advance, and full recovery of the machine is included in the policy. The other insurers we''ve tried will only offer 30 days, which I reckon just isn''t enough for a Rewaco owner who''s enjoying himself.'' Bikesure has a huge range of specialist policies for the motorcycle enthusiast, including schemes for trikes and quads.
