FIM WORLD ENDURO CHAMPIONSHIP RND 6 GRAND PRIX OF USA
24 July 2006 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG
KTM Enduro Factory Team Farioli riders Samuli Aro and David Knight claimed respective Enduro 2 and Enduro 3 class wins on day one of the sixth round of the ’06 World Enduro Championship,
Spain’s Ivan Cervantes finishing in second in the Enduro 1 class. With the host town of Hancock having been hit by severe flooding in the weeks leading up the event mid-way through the opening day the heavens opened and it rained harder than at any other previous round of the ’06 WEC series, Thankfully, after close to two hours of torrential rain, the weather brightened up and despite conditions being horrendously wet and muddy the first day finished under clear skies In the Enduro 1 class reigning world champion Ivan Cervantes battled hard aboard his 250 EXC-F in the horrendously wet and muddy conditions to finish a close runner-up to Poland’s Bartosz Oblucki. Finishing just eight seconds behind after close to 40 minutes of special test action Ivan further extended his lead in the ’06 E1 world championship finishing ahead of Italian Simone Albergoni. Narrowly missing out on a podium place factory KTM rider Alessandro Belometti placed in fourth after winning the first timed test of the day. With less than 10 seconds separating Oblucki and Cervantes in the Enduro 1 class the results at the top of the Enduro 2 category were even closer at the end of the first day of the GP of USA as Finn Samuli Aro placed his factory KTM just over three seconds ahead of countryman Mika Ahola. Winning the first three tests of the day Samuli then had a big crash on the second motocross test of the event and despite losing close to half a minute to his rivals fought back to claim a well deserved win. Spaniard Xevi Galindo finished as the second best KTM rider in sixth with KTM US racer Kurt Caselli finishing less then two second behind in seventh with French KTM rider Fabien Planet a further two seconds behind in eighth. Finishing as the day’s fastest overall competitor KTM’s David Knight topped the Enduro 3 class for the 11th time this season finishing over one and a half minutes ahead of Frenchman Seb Guillaume. Winning each and every test in the Enduro 3 class the reigning E3 world champion revelled in the slippery conditions to further extend his ’06 world championship lead. David’s team-mate Marko Tarkkala finished third after running into troubles in the second timed enduro test. 2006 World Enduro Championship Rnd 6 Grand Prix USA – Hancock, New York – Day 1 Enduro 1 1.
