SPEEDWAY NEWS AND FIXTURES - 23 JULY
23 July 2006 - British Speedway Promoters Association

DENMARK won the FIM World Cup on a night of high drama at Reading''s Smallmead Stadium.

The Danes, all of whom are contracted to British clubs, picked up 45-points to finish eight clear of Sweden on 37, Great Britain scored 36 and Australia 35.

But the final scoreline hardly tells the story of how close the meeting was with all four nations in contention going into the last round of races.

DENMARK 45: Nicki Pedersen 13, Hans Andersen 12, Bjarne Pedersen 9, Charlie Gjedde 6, Niels-Kristian Iversen 5.

SWEDEN 37: Andreas Jonsson 14, Antonio Lindback 11, Fredrik Lindgren 5, Peter Karlsson 5, Mikael Max 2.

GREAT BRITAIN 36: Scott Nicholls 15, Lee Richardson 7, Mark Loram 7, Chris Harris 4, Chris Louis 3.

AUSTRALIA 35: Jason Crump 12, Leigh Adams 8, Todd Wiltshire 8, Ryan Sullivan 4, Travis McGowan 3.

JUBILANT Denmark manager Jan Staechmann paid tribute to his young side after seeing them lift the world cup.

Staechmann, the former Stoke rider, said: ''I''m just so proud of the boys and it''s a really great feeling to be world champions.

''We even had to put up with some diabolical refereeing which went against us but we held our nerve to win, it''s a great moment for us.''
