HOT ON THE ROAD
19 July 2006 - Green Flag Motoring Assistance
With temperatures soaring, motorists are being advised to drive with extracare and are urged to take steps before travelling to avoid trouble.
Average temperatures for July are usually low 20s Celsius but weather forecasters predict that today (Wednesday) some parts of the UK (London and South West) will experience scorching temperatures of 35 Celsius. Breakdown specialist, Green Flag Motoring Assistance, is expecting an increase in calls and is issuing advice to the millions of motorists on the roads this week to minimise the risk of breaking down and staying comfortable in the heat. Make sure your car is well maintained as lingering mechanical problems can be triggered with extreme heat. Check the car''s water levels and take plenty of bottled water on board. Some to top up the car and prevent over-heating and some to keep passengers hydrated. Air conditioning in the car can help keep you cool but is not always fuel efficient. Make sure you have enough fuel and if travelling slow, open the windows instead. Take sun cream in the car as you are still at risk of sunburn through the glass and increased risk if the windows are down. This is especially important for drivers of convertibles. Carry a fully-charged mobile phone in the car with the number of your breakdown organisation stored in it in case of emergencies. Weather forecasts for tomorrow (Thursday) predict thunder storms for some parts of the UK (Scotland, the Midlands and the East) which means drivers will have to quickly adapt from clear skies and sunshine to heavy rain and thunder storms. Philippa Naylor, spokesperson for Green Flag, said: ''We are expecting higher volumes of calls with over-heating being a major issue in these high temperatures. Our advice to motorists is to avoid travelling in the hottest and busiest parts of the day and be well prepared.''
