SHEFFIELD SPEEDWAY
09 September 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association
ONE of the sport''s greatest unbeaten home records was broken as Tigers suffered a 46-44 defeat at the hands of Workington on Thursday night.
It was the first time the South Yorkshire club had suffered a home league defeat since 1998 - and it was one of their former riders, Simon Stead, who did most of the damage with a 15-point maximum. And Stead insisted he was not trying to rub his former fans up the wrong way with his victory celebrations after the meeting. He said: ''It''s fantastic for me to get a maximum and win the meeting with Workington, but I still have a lot of friends here at Owlerton. ''There used to be some bad feeling towards Neil Machin after I left the club but I''ve helped Sheffield keep their unbeaten record for so long by making several guest appearances in place of Sean Wilson this season. It''s sad for them to lose the record, but I''d like to think I''ve done my bit to help them this season.'' TIGERS: Ricky Ashworth 14, James Birkinshaw 12+3, Andre Compton 7, Ben Wilson 4+2, Shane Parker 4, Richard Hall 3. WORKINGTON: Simon Stead 15, Rusty Harrison 9, Carl Stonehewer 8+1, James Wright 6+1, Brett Woodifieild 5+3, Aidan Collins 1, Kauko Nieminen 0.
