GREMLINS RUIN KIRKHAM’S SCOTTISH WEEKEND
17 July 2006 - Jon Kirkham

After the high’s of a top ten finish riding as a ‘super-sub’ for the Rizla Suzuki squad at the previous Snetterton round Jon Kirkham’s Scottish outing turned into something of a nightmare with a serious of mechanical gremlins ruining his weekend.

Kirkham could only look on from the sidelines in the second race as the rider he substituted for - Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne came back from injury to take his and the Rizla Suzuki’s teams first win of the season at a balmy Knockhill circuit.

The newly re-paved venue perched high in the hills overlooking Edinburgh caused the Scuderia Stellare team problems from the outset with a gearbox failure compromising Kirkham’s qualifying, leaving him an uncharacteristically low 22nd on the grid.

A number of other minor problems left the Scuderia Stellare team with a few headaches overnight with everyone hopeful of a reversal of fortune come race-day.

It wasn’t to be though as the gearbox problem returned for race one and Kirkham was forced to make do with two gears for much of the race before his bike eventually cried enough on lap sixteen.

With the parts bin well and truly raided time ran out for the team to get Kirkham back out on the grid for the second race and he was left wondering what might have been.

“The Croft test the previous week didn’t go as well as we’d hoped and we seemed to have carried some of these gremlins over to Knockhill. So unfortunately we were on the back foot almost from the word go. The only thing to do now is re-group and get it all sorted for next week at Oulton.”

Team spokesperson Chris Johnson echoed Kirkham’s sentiments.

“Some weekends just don’t go according to plan and this was one of them. We just hope that this has hit us all at once and there will be no repeats. It’s a case of treating each race on its own merits and I think we can write Knockhill off and look to Oulton Park as an opportunity to make amends.”

Kirkham and the Scuderia Stellare team have just a few days before the next round of the British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park in Cheshire commencing on Friday the 21st July.
