CAIROLI TAKES SECOND OVERALL, TOWNLEY MX2 WORLD CHAMPION
12 September 2004 - Yamaha Racing
Italian teen sensation Antonio Cairoli (Team Yamaha De Carli) took a well earned second overall at the MX2 Grand Prix of Ireland at Ballykelly.
The holeshot specialist from Sicilly finished third in the opening race and fourth in race two. The rain plagued race also witnessed the crowning of a new world champion when the young New Zealander Ben Townley (KTM) won the first race. Townley repeated his win in the second race. Rattray (KTM) remains second in standings, Cairoli is now third, Chiodi (Team YamahaRZ) is fifth. Antonio Cairoli (Team Yamaha De Carli) grabbed the holeshot in the opening race and led the race in the early stages. However a few small mistakes saw the new hot shot Italian drop to third place at the finish. Mark Dereuver (KTM) seemed to have an edge over his team-mate Townley, but technical problems forced the Dutch star to retire and Townley was handed first place on a plate. Second place went to Tyla Rattray (KTM), Marvin Van Deale took fourth in front of YZ250F mounted Rui Goncalves (Van Beers Yamaha). Alessio Chiodi recovered from a weak start to finish seventh. Race two saw the new MX2 World Champion hit turn one in first place and he never looked back delivering a perfect score card and lead every lap to the finish. Cairoli once again had mixed fortunes on the fast and bumpy Ballykelly circuit and eventually finished the race in fourth. Aigar Leok (KTM) took second place, and Marc de Reuver took third. Young French rider Anthony Boissiere (PSM Casola Yamaha) came home seventh, leading Claudio Federici (Team Yamaha De Carli). Antonio Cairoli (Yamaha De Carli) - second overall ''It wasn''t easy to win races today because Ben was really fast. I rode quite well in race one and although I made some mistakes I was happy with my performance. In the second race I started very well but once again Ben was really fast but I rode well again and finished the race in fourth position and the two results gave me second overall which of course I''m pleased with and I''m hoping now to finish the year in third place overall.'' Alessio Chiodi (Team Yamaha RZ) - eighth position ''I qualified well on Saturday and took second place to Ben Townley. Today though I got two bad starts and on this track it was very difficult to make fast progress through the field. I''m not so happy with my result today because I may have now lost to possibility to catch Stephen Sword in the championship. Every race is different to another, but today wasn''t a good one for me.'' Claudio Federici (Team Yamaha De Carli)- 16th ''Unfortunately today wasn''t a good day for me. I''m having a lot of pain and problems with my ankle injury and this weighed heavily on my mind all day.In the first race I took an average start and struggled to make progress, I then made a small mistake and my race was pretty much over. Then in race two I got a fantastic start and worked hard to stay as high up in the positions as I could. I eventually finished the race in eighth place which is quite good, but my overall position of 16th is not so impressive. Straight after the GP of South Africa I will have an operation on my ankle injury and then look forward to the 2005 season.'' Andrea Bartolini (Team Yamaha RZ) - 28th position ''It''s my last season racing and I''d like to try and stay fit and healthy for when I retire so this is the main reason why I didn''t finish either race today. I got quite poor starts in both races which meant that I had a lot of work to do to make it into the points. It''s very difficult for me to race at full speed now so it''s best to do what I can and try to retire healthy.''
