TAKING BENNETTS BRITISH SUPERBIKE ‘RIDER OF THE YEAR’ AWARD
Bennetts, title sponsor of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, has revealed that Leon Haslam is leading the way in the ‘Fans Rider of the Year’ award at the halfway point of the BSB season. Despite not having recorded a single race victory, British rider Haslam, appears to have caught the imagination of the fans with his sterling performances in the first seven rounds of this campaign. His consistent podium finishes signify that he is set to mount a serious challenge as the season reaches its climax. Current champion Gregorio Lavilla, and Rizla Suzuki’s Shane Byrne, are in second and third place respectively at the halfway point in the race for the ‘Fans Rider of the Year’ accolade. The ‘Fans Rider of the Year’ is just one of several categories being voted for by bikers in the 2006 Bennetts BSB Fans Poll. The UK’s number one for motorcycle insurance has been canvassing opinion at each of the seven rounds of the Championship so far, with thousands of people having cast their votes. To date, Mallory Park has received the thumbs up as the fans favourite circuit to view all the action, whilst Brands Hatch leads the way in having the best facilities, however, it can all change with only six more rounds to go. With Gregorio Lavilla and Leon Haslam setting the pace in the Championship, the Airwaves Ducati team, who hold a 43 point advantage in the manufacturers championship, has received the most votes as the fans’ favourite British Superbike Team, with Rizla Suzuki and HM plant Honda also proving popular. On a light hearted note, race fans were also asked to nominate who they would most like to ride pillion with. Maria Fowler, one of the ‘Bennetts Babes’, has so far received the most votes. Kal Samra, Managing Director of Bennetts, said: “It’s been an exciting season so far, and the initial results of the 2006 Bennetts BSB Fans Poll will certainly raise one or two eyebrows. Teams and riders all agree that these awards are special because they are voted for by the very people who make the Championship so successful – the fans. We look forward to seeing the results of the final rounds and announcing the overall winners at the end of the season.” Results after Round Seven: Bennetts BSB Fans Rider of the Year: 1.
