SHEFFIELD SPEEDWAY
07 September 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association

PAUL Cooper was the star of the show as Sheffield''s Conference Trophy youngsters beat Coventry 49-40 at Owlerton.

The fast-rising youngster chalked up a paid maximum - even though he was penalised for tape touching in his first ride. Cooper was put back 15-metres but had reeled in the other three riders and took the lead on only the third lap. Cooper was backed by both Richard Hall and Ben Wilson, who both had their own maximum hopes wrecked by first ride blips. The midlanders made a determined effort to keep on terms, especially with hot prospect Karlis Ezergailis winning his first three races en-route to paid 17 points from reserve and they were only two adrift after heat 12. But the Prowlers then turned the screw as Hall and Wilson combined for a 5-1 in heat 13 and then Hall and Cooper did likewise in the finale.
SHEFFIELD: P. Cooper 13+2, R. Hall 12, B. Wilson 8+1, L. Priest 7, K. Langley 5, M. Mitchell 2+1, D. Speight 2. *ANOTHER Sheffield prospect, 14-year-old Josh Auty, cruised to five straight wins in the fifth round of the British Under 15 Championship which followed the Conference Trophy match. It keeps Auty in pole position in the new series, which reaches a climax at Mildenhall next month. Leading scorers: J. Auty 15, G. Cottham 12, M. Bates 12 (after run off), S. Waldron 11, S. Hurst 11, K. Hughes10.
