MOTORCYCLISTS DEATH STATS HAVE DECREASED, BUT MORE NEEDS TO BE DONE
05 July 2006 - DIAmond Advanced Motorist Test

DIAmond Advanced Motorcyclists welcomes the Governments new casualty statistics showing the numbers of motorcyclists killed in road crashes reduced, but we strongly believe more needs to be done.

The figures released by the Department of Transport at the end of June show that despite a continued growth of motorcycling in Britain, 16 less motorcyclists died in 2005.

However the statistics show that 569 motorcyclists lost their lives on Britain’s roads last year, 5,939 were seriously injured and 18,316 were slightly injured.

DIAmond Advanced Motorists General Manager Eddie Barnaville said: “We are pleased to see the statistics have reduced but we can’t be complacent and must remember that 569 motorcyclists are still losing their lives every year, which is more than one person every day.

“We think bikers should take more training as they have a responsibility to look after themselves and make themselves as visible as possible to other road users.

“We recommend for all bikers regardless of experience to take the DIAmond Advanced Motorcyclist course.”

The DIAmond Advanced Motorcyclist course is available to all riders wishing to improve skills, boost confidence and learn to ride more safely.

Advanced motorcycling is the ability to control the position and speed of the machine safely, systematically and smoothly, using road and traffic conditions to make progress unobtrusively with skill and responsibility.

Once the course is completed riders can take their Advanced Motorcyclist Assessment which uses the Government Driving Standards Agency’s test marking system. Examiners will mark down on the test if more than six minor errors are made.

After the figure of eight and slow riding sections, which necessarily take place off public roads, the on-road element of the test is over 35 or 40 miles, and routes cover a variety of roads in built up areas, derestricted roads, including dual carriageways and where possible motorways.

The test equips riders to be better and safer motorcyclists, possibly qualifying them for a discount on their insurance premium.
