SECOND CHANCE FOR HARRIS
09 September 2004 - Honda Racing
Defending champion Karl Harris goes to Oulton Park with a second chance to reclaim the British Supersport title.
The 24-year-old Yorkshireman suffered a frustrating visit to HM Plant Honda Racing’s home circuit of Cadwell Park in round 11. Two weeks ago, at the Lincolnshire circuit, Harris missed the chance to claim the series title for a second consecutive year. Harris had to retire on lap three after the chain jumped off the HM Plant Honda Racing CBR600RR at the exit of the Mountain. A frustrated Harris tried in vain to replace the chain and continue the race but was eventually forced to admit defeat. However, he has maintained a 30-point advantage and hopes to seal the championship this weekend. His closest rival is now Honda-mounted Jay Vincent, who claimed the race win at Cadwell Park and overtook Michael Laverty as Harris’s nearest challenger. Sheffield-based Harris is virtually unbeatable on the CBR600RR on the 2.692-mile Cheshire track. He has had three wins from three starts during the last two seasons. It is one of his favourite tracks and he is determined to clinch the title by the end of round 12. Harris’s Red Bull Rookies Honda team-mate Billy McConnell is intent on maintaining consistency this weekend after finishing his first two British Supersport races in 15th and 16th places. The young Australian rider is enjoying the experience of racing at British circuits and has adapted well to the Honda CBR600RR. His aim is to continue finishing races and improve his knowledge of the tracks on the Supersport calendar. Karl Harris (1st = 197 points): “I like Oulton Park, it’s one of my favourite circuits. It’s a fast and flowing track with long straights and tight corners. I had a good finish there last time round. The result at Cadwell Park was disappointing for me – and the HM Plant Honda Racing team – but these things happen. I’m just looking forward to getting back to Oulton and collecting some points to bring me closer to the title.” Billy McConnell: “This round will be my first opportunity to race at Oulton Park, so I’m looking forward to it. Unfortunately, the circuit was wet when we tested and I felt the track was quite physical and demanding. I’m looking forward to Sunday though and I’m hopeful of making the top 15 again.”
