SPEEDWAY NEWS AND FIXTURES - 25TH JUNE
25 June 2006 - British Speedway Promoters Association
SPEEDWAY 1 HANS Andersen enjoyed a fairytale return to the Grand Prix series with victory in Copenhagen on Saturday. Andersen became only the third-ever Wild Card rider to win a GP as he headed home Championship leader Jason Crump in the Final. Crump extended his lead to 41 points as all of his main rivals faltered, with Bjarne Pedersen and Antonio Lindback completing the top four on the night. SPEEDWAY 2 HANS Andersen hopes his Danish Grand Prix win is the prelude to a permanent return to the World Championship series in 2007. The Peterborough skipper was controverially overlooked for a place this year despite reaching five out of nine semi-finals last season. Andersen said: ''I was determined to show that I deserve a place, and to win a Grand Prix in front of such a big Danish crowd was fantastic.'' SPEEDWAY 3 BERWICK''S troubled season took another turn for the worse when recent signing James Birkinshaw suffered a suspected broken leg on Saturday. Birkinshaw crashed heavily in the first race of the Bandits'' home defeat against his parent club Sheffield. Promoter Peter Waite said: ''We do fear that the injury may well prove to be a break, and I only hope riders return to fitness soon.'' SPEEDWAY 4 HOSTS Stoke won the Conference League Fours at Loomer Road on Saturday with captain Luke Priest the hero. Priest defeated the previously unbeaten Chris Johnson of Plymouth in a run-off after the teams had tied on 16 points, the Devils man eventually falling. Priest said: ''It was a magical feeling and one I have been waiting for for three years as Stoke skipper.''
