SPEEDING WILL COST BIKERS MORE THAN POINTS ON THEIR LICENCE
14 July 2004 - Devitt Insurance Services Ltd
New figures from Devitt, one of the UK’s leading motorcycle insurance brokers, show that being caught speeding will hit riders in their pocket as well as on their driving licence.
For example, a biker with a clean driving licence paying £736.28 to insure his Suzuki GSX-R could see a 12% hike in his premium to £821.80 at renewal if he incurs a three-point penalty. And whilst the increase of £85.52 may not seem too steep, it is likely to persist every year until the points are wiped off – usually four years – making the total “extra” insurance cost nearer £350. Graham Darrah, claims manager at Devitt said: “When calculating the right premium for a particular biker, insurers use speeding convictions as one factor when assessing risk. Insurers know that riding too fast reduces the time available to react to dangers and increases the chance of bikers injuring both themselves and third parties. “Therefore it is always worth using a broker, such as Devitt, so that you can access a range of insurers. This is because different insurers give different ratings to factors such as licence endorsements – so some insurers will “load” the premiums of bikers with points more than others.” Graham Darrah added: “There are a whole range of factors that determine a biker’s insurance premium. Whilst licence endorsements will make a difference, the most important thing any rider can do is to adopt a defensive riding style that minimises the number of insurance claims they need to make!” For further information or for an insurance quote, call 0800 200 369
