LAVERTY WINS AGAIN!
06 June 2004 - Honda Racing

Eugene Laverty rode the perfect race at Thruxton to take his third win of the season and increase his British 125GP Championship lead. The 18-year-old Red Bull Rookies Honda rider got a great start to today’s race and led for the first two laps before defending champion Michael Wilcox took the lead.

Laverty responded immediately and retook the advantage. The two Honda RS125 riders then became involved in a battle for the lead for the remainder of the 14-lap race and it was anybody’s guess who would emerge as the victor.

On the final lap of the race, second placed Laverty made sure he was close enough to challenge Michael Wilcox for the lead. He timed his pass to perfection, overtaking a backmarker just before the chicane to claim the victory, the fastest lap and extend his lead at the top of the championship standings to 18 points.

Unfortunately, his Red Bull Rookies Honda team-mate Steven Neate was sidelined by a technical problem he encountered on the warm-up lap and failed to make the grid for the start of the race.

Eugene Laverty: “I knew that the race would be won or lost into the last chicane as Michael had passed me twice through that section. I sat and waited until the last lap and went for it on the drag out of Church corner. It was a perfect last lap and my plan worked a treat. My aim at the start of the day was to increase my lead at the top of the table, so I’ve got to be happy with that. The Red Bull Rookies Honda was faultless and I was relaxed throughout the whole race because I knew we were clear of the rest of the field. I can now go to Brands Hatch safe in the knowledge that I’ve got a comfortable lead in the series.”

Result: 1. E. Laverty (Red Bull Rookies Honda) 19:22.810; 2. M. Wilcox (Honda) + 0.301; 3. C. Elkin (Honda) + 6.036; 4. B. Clark (Honda) + 15.322; 5. J. Pearson (Honda) + 15.690; 6. J.
