IT’S LIMA TIME
21 June 2006 - AMA Pro Racing
It’s late June, summer’s in full swing and motorcycle racing fans in the Midwest are gearing up for one of the favorite AMA Grand Nationals on the calendar, the Lima Half-mile.
The popular race at the Allen County Fairgrounds takes place on Saturday, June 24 and is the sixth round of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship, the third round of the AMA GNC Twins Championship. Defending AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr, of Fleetwood, Pa., is seeking his fifth victory at Lima. Carr leads the series coming into this race, but 2001 was the last year the Quality Checked Certified Pre-Owned Ford rider took victory on the racy half-mile of pea-gravel. Jared Mees, of Clio, Mich., is the defending Lima winner. It was a year ago that the former AMA Rookie of the Year earned his first AMA Grand National victory. “I couldn’t believe I won a national in Lima, Ohio,” said Mees. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would win my first national on a cushion track.” Besides Carr and Mees, another rider always tough at Lima is Joe Kopp, The veteran from Mica, Wash., took victory at Lima in 2003 and 2004. “You have to really be on your game at Lima,” Kopp said. “If you are off even the slightest bit it will cost you at that track.” Saturday evening’s program will include the George Roeder Memorial Dash, a five-lap special money event featuring just six riders. There will also be a Pro Sport support race that will run prior to the national. The Lima Half-mile has been on the AMA Grand National Championship calendar since 1984. The event has quickly become a fan favorite. Hundreds ride their motorcycles to the Allen County Fairgrounds to watch a great evening of racing and to perhaps eat some corndogs and cotton candy.
