AIRWAVES DUCATI AND Q8OILS MAINTAIN THEIR LEAD
23 June 2006 - Airwaves Ducati

AFTER A WEEKEND OF STOP-START FORTUNES AT SNETTERTON

Airwaves Ducati retained their lead in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, in spite of a weekend of mixed fortunes at Snetterton. Leon Haslam started in commanding form, shattering the Norfolk circuit records as he claimed his third pole start of the season, at an average speed of 108.95mph. However, a win proved elusive, with both races plagued by accidents, safety cars and red and yellow flags.

Race one was an exciting battle between the Airwaves Ducatis and HM Plant Hondas, until Karl Harris crashed out spectacularly on lap 5, resulting in the safety car controlling the race for 3 laps. When the race restarted, Haslam’s assault on Kiyonari’s lead began, with Lavilla close behind. The battle for the top podium spot continued all the way to the chequered flag, but Haslam struggled to find an opportunity to overtake and the race finished with Kiyo in 1st, just 0.461 seconds ahead of Haslam in 2nd and Lavilla in 3rd.

The second race proved equally eventful, with Haslam taking the lead late in the first lap and setting a new lap record of 1:05.054 on lap 11. When the race was red flagged on lap 12, Kiyo took the lead from the re-start and Lavilla moved into 2nd with Leon in 3rd, until Greg came off on the following lap, resulting in a yellow flag and the reappearance safety car. Fortunately Greg was fine and walked away from the crash unscathed. Haslam then battled to the finish but the speed of the Honda was too much on Snetterton’s long straights and the race finished with Kiyo 1st, Haslam 2nd and Virgin Yamaha’s Tommy Hill in 3rd.

Airwaves Ducati has now reached the halfway point of the year and both Greg and Leon have completed 14,000 kilometres on the 999F06 Ducatis. They have set lap records at five out of six circuits raced at and have not suffered mechanical failure during any races. No wonder team manager Colin Wright wanted to say a “big thank you to Q8Oils”.
