AMA SUPERMOTO, ELKHART LAKE, WI: ROUND 2: KTM ON THE PODIUM AT ROAD AMERICA (04.06.2006)
04 June 2006 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG

KTM scored three podium finishes on Saturday night at the purpose-built Briggs and Stratton Motorplex circuit located at Road America, near Elkhart Lake, WI, the scene of the second round of the 2006 AMA Supermoto Championship.

Performing in front of a massive crowd while sharing the spotlight with the AMA Superbike series at Road America, Team Red Bull KTM HMC was geared up to compete at their home track and give their vocal fan base something to cheer about.

Jurgen Kunzel did just that in the evening’s final race. The defending AMA Supermoto champion bounced back from a disappointing opening leg, in which he was forced out early with a broken chain, to fight for the win. The German was the fastest man on the circuit for much of the contest aboard his KTM 450SMR and ultimately ended up crossing the line in second place.

Kunzel said, “I didn’t have the best of luck in the first moto but that’s racing. I just went out and had fun and gave my best in the second race. Second place is a good result for the team and myself and I’m really happy about that. My team worked really hard and gave me a good bike. I hope next time out we will be on the podium again.”

Kunzel’s teammate Kurt Nicoll put in a consistent performance on Saturday, claiming a sixth-place result in the opening leg and finishing one place higher in fifth in the second race. The former World MX star currently leads KTM’s challenge in the early-season title fight, ranking third with 71 points.

All Access Racing KTM’s Micky Dymond also scored a pair of top-tens in AMA Supermoto action, putting in seventh and eighth-place rides, while KTM-mounted Steve Drew grabbed ninth place aboard his KTM 450SMR in the first premier class race.

As usual KTM was well represented in the Supermoto Unlimited division, accounting for more than half of the riders in the top ten. Dymond, the reigning champion in the class, pushed hard at the front and ultimately finished as the runner-up.

The local favorite, Team Red Bull KTM HMC’s Ben Carlson, ripped away at the front early on aboard his KTM 560SMR but crashed with negotiating the dirt section on lap 6 of 18. The Wisconsin-native remounted only to suffer another spill, this time on the pavement. Carlson refused to give up, however, and he carried on to a gritty third-place effort.

The hard-earned podium finish combined with his season opening victory in Fontana, CA has Carlson out in front of the Unlimited championship hunt following two rounds with a quick 45 points.
