REAL RACERS REV UP FOR VINTAGE RETURN TO OULTON PARK
05 June 2006 - MotorSport Vision

Pre and post-war sports cars to compete at classic Cheshire circuit

Over 150 cars from the Vintage Sports-Car Club will be racing at Oulton Park on Saturday 10 June as part of the Hawthorn Memorial Trophy event which offers a memorable and different day out in Cheshire. Vintage Cars (from the pre World War Two era) and Historic Racing Cars (from the post-war period up until 1966) will compete in an event which allows people to not only look at classic machines up close, but to see them being raced hard on one of the country’s top race circuits.

The event features cars from evocative marques such as Alvis, Bentley, Alfa Romeo, Riley, Aston Martin, Delage, and Morgan with qualifying in the morning followed by 10 races throughout the afternoon.

In the Hawthorn Memorial and Spanish Trophies, 1950s Grand Prix single-seaters join the pre-war ERAs, Bugattis, MGs and Frazer Nashes, competing for trophies originally won by the great Mike Hawthorn. Competitors from the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association will also be present with pre-1966 rear-engined Grand Prix cars such as Coopers, Lotuses and Brabhams. A 1950s Sports Racing Cars event will include cars from the stable of Allard, Jaguar, Cooper, Lotus, HWM, Cooper and Lister as they grace the circuit again in a 10-lap thriller.

Local competitors will be out in force, including Graham Allen and Mark Butterworth from Alderley Edge (1933 Aston Martin Sports and 1921 Vauxhall E Type Velox respectively), Duncan Arthurs from Oldham with his 1926 3-Litre Bentley, Andrew Hadfield from Hyde with his 1933 Wolseley Hornet Special and Nigel Hall from Mottram with his 1935 Lagonda LG35 amongst many others.

Sports fans with a passing interest in the weekend’s other sporting events need not worry, as both Qualifying for the British Grand Prix and the opening game of England’s World Cup campaign will be shown in the circuit’s Chequers Restaurant and Bar.

Tickets for the meeting will be available on the gate and cost £20, with children aged 12 and under admitted free. Parking and paddock access are also free, providing the chance to get close to the machines and meet the drivers.
