ELITE LEAGUE LATEST... ARENA-ESSEX boss Ronnie Russell has led tributes from the Hammers camp, saddened by the weekend news that young Polish star Lukasz Romanek took his own life during the early hours of Saturday morning. Romanek started the season with the Hammers, slotting into a reserve position, but found himself released from the side over the Easter period. The highlight of his career, which lasted six short years, was victory in the Junior European Championship at Pardubice in 2001. BELLE VUE star Simon Stead rode through the pain barrier to score 11 points as the Aces won their top-of-the-table clash with Peterborough on Monday. Stead said: ''My shoulder was pretty weak. It was touch and go about riding but I decided to take a chance and it paid off. ''Our physio Steve got me through the meeting and I''ll be seeing my own physio in Holmfirth every day before Friday''s match at Coventry.'' COVENTRY star Rory Schlein says his fine form at present is down to positive thinking rather than dramatic mechanical changes. Schlein said: ''Gating is the main thing, and I''ve changed a few aspects of my technique which has helped a lot. It''s not so much bike set-up, but more a mental thing. ''I''m trying to keep the front wheel down, and I really want to get to that first corner in front. I''ve gone to a different level on the mental side, and I''m going to the start-line looking down a tunnel and thinking no-one can beat me.'' EASTBOURNE promoter Jon Cook said the Eagles'' 10-point win over Swindon was proof that his team can still make an impact this year - especially after the Robins had won by 14 points on their previous visit to Arlington. Cook said: ''The win shows what we are capable of and in my book there is no reason why we cannot do that consistently. ''It was a fantastic team performance and a fantastic spirit within the team. You only had to look at the Swindon team manager''s face during the meeting. He fully expected to get a win here.'' IPSWICH skipper Chris Louis brought back memories of his golden days when he scored a full maximum in the Witches'' Cup win over Coventry, which will give them a six-point lead to defend in the second leg. Louis said: ''I cannot remember the last time I scored a full 15-point maximum at Foxhall, but I loved every race. The bike felt fast, I felt good and the races with Scott Nicholls were just great. ''Whether a six point lead is enough to take to Coventry remains to be seen, but we have performed there well in recent visits, so we have every chance of making progress.'' OXFORD promoter Aaron Lanney has given his backing to skipper David Howe, who has found the going tough since his move from Wolverhampton over the winter. Lanney said: ''I''ve stayed loyal to David and never given him a hard time. He''s determined to score points for the team and determined to get himself back into the form we all know he is capable of. ''He knows I believe in him, and I feel sure he has what it takes to ride himself back into some form, and hopefully we will see the real Howie!'' PETERBOROUGH promoter Colin Horton is pleased to have captured the signature of popular Dane Ulrich Ostergaard on a full-time Panthers contract in a transfer deal from Eastbourne. Horton said: ''We are building for the future and next season I would like to think we''ll field a team full of Panthers assets. ''I have been very impressed with Ulrich this season so I was keen to make him a Panthers asset, and I''m delighted the deal has been concluded.'' POOLE will give Shaun Tacey the chance to earn himself a contract for the rest of the season at Wimborne Road after signing the experienced British rider on loan from Mildenhall to replace Daniel Davidsson. Promoter Matt Ford said: ''We are more than pleased to have Shaun join us. He has an attacking style that is well suited to most of the Elite League tracks and will do a great job for us on our travels. ''I believe that his no-nonsense attitude and aggressive riding could be the answer to our problems at reserve.'' READING skipper Greg Hancock was pleased with the Bulldogs'' all-round strength in their convincing win over Ipswich on Monday. Hancock said: ''Ipswich have been going really well recently, so it made the performance and result even more satisfying. Now we have to keep the good form going and get ourselves back on top of the league. ''We now have a few days rest, which will be nice as we''ve been very busy the last few weeks and then it''s Oxford here next week. I''m looking forward to that one up against one of my old teams.'' SWINDON skipper Leigh Adams was in philosophical mood after the club''s winning run in the Elite League Pairs was ended by Belle Vue at Blunsdon on Sunday. Adams said: ''We''ve won it for the last two years and it''s a pretty good job to get to the Final again but we''re disappointed. ''We did everything we could but got pipped at the post. When it''s not your year, it''s not your year.'' WOLVERHAMPTON manager Peter Adams says the club''s faith in American star Billy Hamill is being justified as the 1996 World Champion hits his best form of the season. Adams said: ''When we were talking during the winter I said that I had great faith in Billy becoming a genuine force in the Elite League once again and that''s what he has become. ''He''s obviously enjoying life with us, he''s got the environment he wants here at Monmore Green and I suspect the only regret he has is that he didn''t come here sooner!'' PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST... BERWICK promoter Peter Waite admits he has much to reflect upon after a troubled week of away matches which have resulted in a number of heavy defeats. Waite said: ''We had too many weak spots in the side, and they dragged us down. Notes have been made and will be looked into in-depth as disappointments are coming way too often for us this year.'' EDINBURGH youngster William Lawson has two breaks in his elbow, one in the elbow joint and one just above, following his recent crash at Glasgow. Monarchs spokesman Mike Hunter said: ''The hosptial''s recommendation is that he doesn''t ride again for four weeks though naturally William wants to be back sooner.'' GLASGOW manager Stewart Dickson says the Tigers could even have surpassed their good start to the Premier League campaign had they not suffered from injuries and illnesss. Dickson said: ''We could easily be sitting with three away wins but missing riders proved key in both defeats, and that is something we will have to live with. However, all I am seeing from the side right now is positives.'' THE Isle of Wight will have Krister Marsh back in their team this week after his recovery from a mystery virus. Co-promoter Dave Pavitt said: ''Krister wasn''t feeling well during a recent home match and he visited his doctor who sent him for various tests which left him sidelined for our Northern tour.'' KING''S LYNN team manager Rob Lyon feels that the Stars are set for their toughest tests of the season throughout June, starting with this week''s clash with Workington. Lyon said: ''''Everything has gone to plan so far but now the going is going to get tough, Workington have an incredible team and with Richie Dennis as a guest at reserve it will be a tough meeting, probably our hardest of the year so far.'' MILDENHALL promoter Mick Horton expects to unveil a new signing to replace the retired Andrew Moore at this Saturday''s home meeting against Newcastle. Horton said: ''It''s a real body blow, both ourselves and Eastbourne offered to help Andrew but there''s nothing we can do about it now. I will think about it over the next few days and then make a decision about his replacement.'' NEWCASTLE manager George English reserved special praise for reserve Jamie Robertson after the Diamonds'' win over Newport on Monday. English said: ''Jamie was magnificent, using the whole track at different stages of the meeting to pass his rivals. It was great to win the meeting and all the team pulled together well.'' NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone reflected on a positive weekend of speedway with the club staging two meetings in three days either side of the British Grand Prix at nearby Cardiff. Stone said: ''We had good crowds and a lot of spectacular racing. Overall it was a very successful weekend for Newport Speedway and a feast of racing in the Principality.'' REDCAR manager Brian Havelock has praised the improved scoring of reserve Daniel Giffard, which he puts down to improved confidence and better machinery. Havelock said: ''Dan is enjoying the benefit of Sean Wilson doing his bikes and he''s showing a lot of confidence which is good because 85 per cent of this game is about confidence.'' RYE HOUSE are likely to promote from within as they seek to cover for the long-term injury absence of Luke Bowen, who broke his leg at Hoddesdon on Sunday. Danny Betson, Robert Mear and Ben Powell from the clubs'' Conference League Raiders team may well be given appearances on a rotational basis. SHEFFIELD know that only a win and aggregate bonus point from Thursday''s Premier Trophy clash with Stoke will guarantee qualification for the semi-finals after they slipped up at Edinburgh last Friday. Co-promoter Neil Machin said: ''Rider replacement for Ben Wilson hardly scored any points, but at least it sets everything up for a thriller on Thursday. We are determined to get back to form and make it to the semis.'' SOMERSET star Paul Fry could miss the rest of the season after breaking his left leg in last Friday''s win over Berwick. Rebels co-promoter Jo Lawson said: ''Obviously this is a shattering blow both for Paul and for the team. It''s unbelievable the run of bad luck we''ve had this season.'' STOKE do not expect to be without Paul Clews for any significant length of time after his crash in last Sunday''s win over Berwick, which came after he had reeled off four unbeaten rides. Manager John Adams said: ''He knocked himself out and was taken to hospital as a precaution, but it doesn''t seem to be much more than concussion.'' WORKINGTON are hoping that Paul Thorp''s foot injury proves not to be as serious as first feared and that he has suffered just tendon damage rather than a break. Comets boss Graham Drury said: ''He was in a lot of pain but the fact that he managed to drive home was something, and after the swelling goes down he''s likely to visit his local hospital to get a more accurate picture. The general feeling is that it could have been worse.'' FIXTURE PICTURE...
