WEEKLY ROUNDUP - 13 JUNE
13 June 2006 - British Speedway Promoters Association
ELITE LEAGUE LATEST... ARENA-ESSEX promoter Ronnie Russell has bemoaned his team''s misfortune after Joonas Kylmakorpi joined the Hammers'' injury list in last Wednesday''s home defeat by Wolverhampton. Russell said: ''I can''t believe how unlucky we are. To lose Joonas who is riding so well is devastating, especially as it was after the race had finished. ''We never seemed to adapt to the slick conditions which is a surprise as we have done so well in our home meetings this season.'' BELLE VUE star Simon Stead felt he had got his job done by finishing on the rostrum at the British Final to keep his hopes of a 2007 Grand Prix place alive. Stead said: ''It would have been fantastic to win the British title but the main aim was to qualify for the next round of the Grand Prix and I did that. ''At least I got a place on the British final rostrum for the first time, despite some bad luck. The next round is in Hungary or Slovakia but I''ve never ridden in either so it doesn''t matter where I go.'' COVENTRY star Chris Harris says that his season should now get better and better after overcoming a series of mechanical problems. Harris said: ''We''re working closely with Brian Andersen, who is doing a good job. We have changed a few things recently and that seems to have worked. ''I''d been hoping to go to Cardiff as the Wild Card this year, but that all went pear-shaped with the way I was riding at the beginning of the season so you don''t expect to get things like that.'' EASTBOURNE co-promoter Jon Cook is pleased with the progress of reserve Cameron Woodward, who is gradually getting to grips with Elite League racing. Cook said: ''I thought Cameron looked superb on Saturday. He was so in control of his bike, and he is not on a wing and a prayer. ''He looks as if he is thinking the whole time. It was a very mature performance from a young rider and who is very inexperienced at this level.'' IPSWICH star Pepe Protasiewicz turned in one of his best-ever performances in the Elite League when he dropped just one point in the Witches'' impressive win over Swindon. Protasiewicz said: ''I am very pleased with this meeting, I have had a couple of poor meetings in England recently and to score 14 makes me very happy. ''To beat Leigh Adams twice was very good for me, although he made a faster start in Heat 15 so I did not get a maximum score. For the team to have a 21-point lead to take to Swindon is good but we must still ride well to get the bonus point.'' OXFORD promoter Aaron Lanney has praised David Howe for his return to form, which was highlighted by a score of paid 13 at home to Poole last week. Lanney said: ''I''m delighted to see him back on-form. We had a long chat about things last week and it seems to have worked. ''I think now the rest of the League can start to take us far more seriously, and our recent home wins have come as a major boost.'' PETERBOROUGH have signed Polish sensation Karol Zabik, who will make his debut at Wolverhampton next Monday in place of the injured Piotr Swiderski. Owner Colin Horton said: ''So many people have told me how good he is, and I know that several other clubs were after him so I''m delighted we''ve got him. ''It''s been a long battle to get his signature, but it''s paid off for us and I am sure he will do a fantastic job for us.'' POOLE star Krzysztof Kasprzak faces another three to four weeks out of action after re-breaking his collarbone in a road accident over the weekend. Kasprzak said: ''The Doctor told me that I cannot have anymore laser, or magnetic pulse treatment because both ends of the broken bones have flattened out and they might not knit together perfectly. ''I would like to thank the Poole management for being so understanding, and hope to be able to get across for the Sky match against Arena when I can see my friends and sponsors, and hopefully say a few words to the Poole fans.'' READING boss Jim Lynch was pleased to see the Bulldogs overcome adversity to see off local rivals Oxford - despite the loss of Charlie Gjedde through injury with Janusz Kolodziej already out. Lynch said: ''Fair play to Oxford for pushing us all the way, but I think it''s fair to say we didn''t have the best of luck. ''However, the five riders we had left responded magnificently, rose to the occasion and pulled off a good win.'' SWINDON boss Alun Rossiter is growing increasingly frustrated by the Robins'' disappointing displays on the road, which continued at Ipswich on Monday. Rossiter said: ''It was another poor performance, and we have turned into a real Jekylll and Hyde side at the moment. We''ve had riders winning Individual meetings, but they just didn''t come to the races. ''The riders keep saying they want grippy starts, but they couldn''t handle them when they were grippy at either Eastbourne or Ipswich.'' WOLVERHAMPTON skipper Peter Karlsson was pleased to take revenge over Nicki Pedersen in the final race of the Monmore men''s dramatic win over Eastbourne. Karlsson said: ''It was a tough meeting, which we always expected because Eastbourne do well around this track but it was good to come out on top in the last race. ''Take nothing away from Nicki, he''s a hard rider and tough to beat around here so I was pleased to finally beat him in the last race. And it was nice to see Billy Hamill behind me in second place, although he''s been there with me a few times this season so it wasn''t a big surprise.'' PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST... BERWICK promoter Peter Waite expects a busy week of team changes after losing patience with his under-achieving side following a weekend home defeat by King''s Lynn. Waite stormed: ''By the time the Bandits take to the track next week against Newcastle there will have been multiple team changes made. The time is right to stop the rot here and now as the results have been nothing short of abysmal.'' EDINBURGH chief Alex Harkness was in no doubt as to where the Monarchs had fallen short as they were held to a home draw by King''s Lynn. Harkness said: ''We struggled all the time. Our heat leaders are not winning enough races - that''s the bottom line. We needed everyone firing, and that didn''t happen.'' GLASGOW skipper Shane Parker is hoping to delight the home fans at this Sunday''s Premier League Pairs by partnering Danny Bird to a Tigers victory. Parker said: ''As the season has worn on both Danny and myself have been forming a better understanding and hopefully we can take that into the meeting. Make no mistake, this is a meeting we really want to win.'' ISLE OF WIGHT star Jason Bunyan should not face an extended period of inactivity after breaking his collarbone at Newport on Sunday. The break was not complicated and Bunyan is having extensive treatment although the Islanders will have to use the rider replacement facility whilst he is out. KING''S LYNN are on the verge of club history as if they avoid defeat against Sheffield on Wednesday and at Stoke on Saturday, they will have gone eight matches unbeaten. Co-promoter Jonathan Chapman said: ''This is an amazing situation to be in and one we are all very proud of. King''s Lynn Speedway seems to go from strength to strength at the minute.'' MILDENHALL promoter Mick Horton believes that the Fen Tigers are now looking stong with the arrival of Brent Werner and in-form Jason Lyons leading from the front. Horton said: ''Jason is without doubt the Premier League''s No.1, and Brent had a very good debut on Saturday. The team is looking good now.'' NEWCASTLE''s Austrian rider Manuel Hauzinger proved his true potential with a score of paid 11 in the Diamonds'' six-point win over Mildenhall on Sunday. Team boss George English said: ''Above all, it was great to see Manu finally show us the form we have always known he is capable of producing, he was superb.'' NEWPORT promoter Tim Stone praised the team spirit within the Wasps ranks as they battled to a four-point home victory over the Isle of Wight. Stone said: ''Tony Atkin does pop up with big points for us on occasions, and he and Chris Schramm really pulled the points in for us. They are similar riders in that they are both 100 per cent competitors and both good team men.'' REDCAR reserve Daniel Giffard will return to the Bears ranks this week after suffering from heat exhaustion during their win over Edinburgh last Thursday. Team boss Brian Havelock said: ''As soon as the medics saw him, they told him he had to pull out - he was disappointed because he wanted to carry on riding. But he''ll be back in the side this week.'' RYE HOUSE manager John Sampford has underlined the difficulty the club faces in trying to replace in-form reserve Luke Bowen, who has joined the Rockets'' long-term injury list. Sampford said: ''The way he has been riding, Luke is irreplaceable, and probably the best grade C rider in the country. We''ll be pouirng over a few books and statistics, looking for riders who may be available.'' SHEFFIELD will open their gates early on Thursday for the Top Gun Individual to enable supporters to watch England''s World Cup clash with Trinidad and Tobago. Promoter Neil Machin said: ''We''ve done this in the past and the fact that the England games kicks off at 5pm works very much in our favour, it''s the perfect opportunity for supporters to come along and watch both the football and speedway.'' FORMER England team boss Eric Boocock said he had thoroughly enjoyed his role as stand-in Somerset manager during the Rebels'' Northern tour last weekend. Booock said: ''The Somerset lads were great with me. They could have so easily just wondered who this old bloke was coming in and telling them what to do, but I got on with them all and I hope they all think they got on with me.'' STOKE reserve Barrie Evans was one of the bright spots of the Potters'' home defeat against Glasgow in the Premier Trophy as he scored 12 (paid 14). Evans said: ''I was messing the starts up but had the speed to make up ground. I managed to move Shane Parker over in one race and got annoyed with myself after passing everyone in Heat 14 only to make a mistake on the last turn.'' WORKINGTON are looking forward to the rare luxury of tracking a full-strength team when they take on Edinburgh at Derwent Park this weekend. Comets chief Graham Drury said: ''I''m very hopeful that all the lads will be back on Saturday because it''s been a tough time for us with injuries and James Wright''s absence for the Under-21s.''
