BRITISH SPEEDWAY NEWS AND FIXTURES 3.9.04
03 September 2004 - British Speedway Promoters Association
JIM Lynch is backing Jason Crump to finish the job and become world champion for the first time this season.
Crump holds a comfortable lead with three rounds to go and his Belle Vue co-promoter believes it will be a major surprise if he lets it slip. He said: ''For the first time it''s there for Jason to lose it. He is now in control of his own destiny and, knowing the lad as I do, I feel the time is right for him to become world champion.'' JAMES Brundle is facing a race against time to be fit for a busy weekend of action after hurting his shoulder in a crash at Sheffield. Brundle is due to ride for his Premier League club King''s Lynn on Saturday and for Conference outfit Mildenhall on Sunday. He said: ''I''ve been enjoying my speedway since coming back after my car accident and it''s been good for me to ride for both clubs.'' ISLE of Wight are in the driving seat for a place in the Knockout Cup Final after brushing aside Workington 56-38 at Smallbrook. The Islanders, previous cup winners, had Jason Bunyan in top form with a 13+2 haul against a Comets side who have been in a superb run of form. Carl Stonehewer was top man for the Cumbrians on 15 and there was a rare off-night for Simon Stead who managed only five. HULL''S Paul Thorp has revealed how shocked he was when he got the call to ride for bitter rivals Sheffield in their 56-38 win over King''s Lynn. He said: ''When they rang me I thought it was some sort of joke. I never thought I would wear a Sheffield racejacket! ''As soon as I came off the phone I sent a text message to my mechanic and told him I thought the world had gone mad!''
