BRENDAN ROBERTS TAKES WIN AS WILDCARD RIDER AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND
01 June 2006 - Brendan Roberts
GSXR-Cup - Silverstone Circuit
21-year-old Australian sensation Brendan Roberts took an epic victory as a wildcard rider at the Silverstone round of the GSXR-Cup. Staged alongside the World Superbike races Roberts was given the opportunity to once again show off his talent in front of thousands of British fans, at the sun blessed Northampton Circuit on Sunday. Roberts who was called by Suzuki GB and asked to be a participant in this fierce Championship jumped at the chance along with fellow riders from the British Championship series Tommy Bridewell and Craig Fitzpatrick. Roberts who is currently leading the National Superstock Championship in the UK is certainly proving himself as an up-and-coming star for the future. Gaining pole position by 1.5 seconds from his nearest rival the young Australian was looking forward to a battle with his fellow competitors. Consistently fast throughout the weekend the Grantham based rider was certainly on a mission to prove a point. Locked in a close battle with Tommy Bridewell and Cup Leader, Xavier Simeon, it was not long before the three front runners broke away from the chasing pack. Simeon crashed out of the race leaving Bridewell and Roberts competing against each other. Roberts had the advantage and held off the youngster for the remaining laps taking the overall win by just over a bike length. The Australian who also took pole position at the cancelled Mondello Park British Superstock round was delighted with the win commenting. ''This has been a great experience for me and I''m extremely pleased to have taken the overall win at the end of it all. The weather once again looked doubtful all weekend but luckily the sun shone on race day and enable us to have a good race. I was gutted not to have raced at Mondello last weekend, I know it was a very difficult decision for the organisers to make but they made the right choice. We now have a double round at the Moto GP in July which is great to put us in the spotlight, I''m hoping to get some strong results there and maintain the Championship lead that I currently have.'' Roberts is continually looking for help and support for now and the future.
