Round 3 – Suzuki GSXR European Cup – Silverstone, Northamptonshire

Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th May 2006

Etchilhampton near Devizes in Wiltshire rider Tommy Bridewell claimed a superb second place finish in round three of the Suzuki GSXR European Cup at Silverstone today.

Riding as a wild card entry, the 17 year old qualified on the front row of the grid for the race which supported the World Superbike Championship meeting and in front of a decent sized crowd very nearly took the race victory.

After getting a great start Bridewell battled with fellow wild card entry Brendan Roberts and Championship contender Xavier Simeon until the Belgian rider crashed out leaving the two British wild cards on their own.

Bridewell shadowed Roberts until the final laps and took the lead with one lap remaining but couldn’t hang on to take what would have been a sensational victory and in the end was happy to settle for second place.

“I’m a little bit disappointed because I thought I could have won it but I’m delighted to be on the podium at a World Championship event. Brendan had a big lead and I didn’t think I could peg it back so it’s a bit of a bonus that I managed to run him close. It’s been a great experience and I’d like to thank Suzuki GB for offering me the chance” said Bridewell who now returns to domestic action in the British Supersport Championship aboard the Vivaldi Suzuki at Mallory Park next weekend (2nd to 4th June).
