LAVERTY DOMINANT IN QUALIFYING
05 June 2004 - Honda Racing
Red Bull Rookies Honda rider Eugene Laverty claimed his third consecutive pole position today at Thruxton with a stunning time of 1:21.181 – a quarter of a second inside the existing lap record and over half-a-second faster than anybody else. The championship leading Ulsterman – who celebrated his 18th birthday on Thursday – was delighted with his performance aboard the Red Bull Rookies Honda RS125.
His team-mate Steven Neate narrowly missed out on a front row start to tomorrow’s 16-lap race and qualified fifth on the grid with a personal best time of 1:22.436. This equals his best qualifying position so far, set in the previous round of the British 125GP series at Mondello Park a fortnight ago. Eugene Laverty: “Today was a question of carrying on from where I left off at Mondello Park. I managed to set a good time this morning when the conditions were better than they were this afternoon. We made a few tweaks for the second session and I feel that I am in a strong position for tomorrow’s race. My aim is to take advantage of my pole position and keep my fingers crossed for a good result.” Steven Neate: “I’m gutted because I thought I had every opportunity to qualify on the front row this afternoon. I felt that I was on my fastest lap but the rear came round on me and I was chucked out of my seat on the exit of Goodwood. Luckily I managed to save it in time. Overall though, I’m pleased with the improvement that I have made in every session over the past two days. It’s looking good for the race if I can get away with the leaders.” Qualifying times: 1. E. Laverty (Red Bull Rookies Honda) 1:21.181; 2. C. Elkin (Honda) 1:21.776; 3. M. Wilcox (Honda) 1:22.173; 4. M. Smart (Honda) 1:22.291; 5. S. Neate (Red Bull Rookies Honda) 1:22.436; 6. K. Weston (Honda) 1:22.590; 7. T. Bridewell (Honda) 1:22.854; 8. P.Robinson (Honda) 1:22.870; 9. J. Pearson (Honda) 1:22.958; 10. T. Grant (Honda) 1:22.991
