RAIN STOPS PLAY IN IRELAND, BUT AIRWAVES DUCATI STAY IN FRONT
26 May 2006 - Q8 Oils
Airwaves Ducati have maintained their lead in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship after persistent heavy rain falling throughout the day forced the unprecedented cancellation of Round Five at the Irish Mondello Park circuit.
According to reports from the organisers “Race officials worked frantically with circuit staff in efforts to drain surface water off the track, bringing in additional equipment in an effort to save the event, but at 14.00hrs the decision was made that racing in the fifth round was not possible.” Gregorio Lavilla qualified in third place, putting him on the front row of the grid, with his Airwaves Ducati team mate, Leon Haslam close behind on the second row, in sixth, in spite of having the red flag disrupt their qualifying laps. Lavilla moved into first place early on in the qualifying session with a 1:40.058 lap, beating his own lap record. Irishman Jonathan Rea raised the bar with a blistering time of 1:38.862 and Leon and Greg both responded with sub 1 minute 39 lap times. The Airwaves Ducati riders were then setting themselves up to go out on their final qualifying tyres when a red flag halted the session. When qualifying resumed neither of the Airwaves Ducati team were able to improve on their times, with less than a second separating the riders on the front two rows. Gregorio Lavilla was satisfied with qualifying on the front row. “Today worked well and I improved a lot this afternoon from this morning’s practice. Anyway this is one of my least favourite tracks so it was important for me that I was on the front row and I am pleased that I achieved that.” Despite cold and wet conditions on the tight and twisty 2.25-mile Irish circuit, Q8Oils continue to provide Airwaves Ducati with reliable engine lubrication that enables them to extract maximum power from their Italian V-wins.
