JOHN PENTON GNCC, MILLFIELD, OH: ROUND 7
23 May 2006 - KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG
In a race that saw the top three contenders dice back and forth for three demanding hours, a deep mud hole is to blame for breaking Juha Salminen’s staggering six-race winning streak in the 2006 GNCC series.
Off the start, Barry Hawk and Juha Salminen blasted away from the rest of the pack and three corners later, Salminen was leading. At mile marker four, Salminen took a wrong turn and got lost, losing precious time. Teammate Robbie Jenks also had a good start but started experiencing difficulties and took an unexpected pit stop, dropping him from the top ten. Shane Watts was cautiously moving forward and held onto eighth position. Meanwhile, Salminen quickly caught and passed the leaders but again fell victim to more difficulties as he found himself stuck in deep mud. He removed himself and again charged after the leaders while Jenks was moving back into the top ten. On the last lap, Salminen followed a line that led to a cavernous mud hole, practically swallowing him and his motorcycle. To make matters worse, a lapper fell in front of him, further delaying his escape. Watts was also battling with the muddy conditions as he and two other riders were in a massive fight for fifth. All three riders were halted in the muck, but “Wattsy” unfastened himself first and cruised in, collecting fifth position. Jenks finished twelfth and Salminen was second.
