COUNTDOWN TO 10 IN 10
25 May 2006 - Buell UK

10 Capital Cities in 10 days for BLISS Goes Live Sat 27 May

Tom Johnson and Rob Dransfield will be taking on their extreme challenge with the help of two Buell Ulysses XB12X Adventure Sport motorcycles on Saturday 27 May as they leave London to complete their 4,000 mile journey to raise £30,000 for premature baby charity BLISS.

Following an informal farewell at Warr’s Harley-Davidson in London’s famous King’s Road on Friday 26, the challenge will see the riders leaving London at around 5am Saturday morning and riding to Amsterdam, then on to Berlin, Warsaw, Budapest, Sofia (Bulgaria), Skopje (Macedonia), Rome and Bern before finally ending in Paris 10 days later. With over 4,000 miles to cover in such a short time, Tom and Rob aim to be travelling for up to 12 hours per day – a gruelling test of both man and machine.

On their return, the two intrepid travellers will be enjoying a well deserved lunch break at the legendary Ace Café on London’s North Circular from around 2.30pm on Tuesday June 6. Anyone wishing to come along to the Ace for the afternoon is welcome to, and the guys will have plenty of stories from their trip around the continent!

Tom Johnson said: “We’re now almost at the day of launch. I can’t believe it’s here so quickly! We’re really looking forward to the journey and putting the Ulysses through its paces. We’ve planned as meticulously as we can, so now we’ve just got to hope that we haven’t forgotten anything!

“Our thanks to Warr’s and to the Ace Café for providing such hospitality for us on our departure and return. We can’t wait to come back from the (hopefully) successful trip and be able to give BLISS a great donation; then we know it will have been all worth while.”

Tom (30) is the proud father of twins Harvey and Niles, who were born 10 weeks premature. The landscape architect from Sheffield wanted to give something back to the charity that helped his children through the critical stages of their young lives – and so the “10in10” challenge was founded.

Buell UK has sponsored the two riders with two fully-equipped Ulysses motorcycles, complete with full luggage, Buell Garmin Quest satellite navigation systems, Buell clothing and apparel to suit all weather, and of course best wishes from the company on their arduous journey.

The 10in10 challenge is also supported by Corus Engineering Steels (CES). The company is not only making a donation direct to the BLISS charity from the Stockholding division but also providing funding for the 10in10 trip. The CES contribution will be used to purchase crucial items for the trip, including camping equipment, fuel, ferry crossings and first aid kits.

BLISS relies entirely on voluntary income as Jackie Glazebrook, BLISS fundraising manager, explains: “Every day hundreds of babies are born prematurely or sick -some weigh less than a bag of sugar and are small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. With the help of valued supporters, like Tom and Rob, we can make sure more of these vulnerable babies survive and have the best quality of life. We thank them profusely and wish them the greatest of luck in their endeavour.”
