HARRIS ON POLE AGAIN!
05 June 2004 - Honda Racing
Honda Racing’s Karl Harris claimed his third pole position of the season at Thruxton circuit today. The 24-year-old current British Supersport Champion posted his fastest lap of 1:17.614 in the first qualifying session of the day and no one was able to better this time – not only during the remainder of this session but also during the entire 40-minute afternoon qualifying session.
Harris’ Red Bull Rookies Honda team-mate Jonathan Rea qualified his CBR600RR on the fourth row of the grid in 14th place, after having improved his lap times significantly during the second timed qualifying session. His fastest lap of 1:18.648 was just over a second behind Harris’ pole position time. Karl Harris: “I did 17 laps on a race tyre this afternoon and was really pleased because I got within one tenth of a second of my pole position time set this morning. Consequently, I’ve got a great race set-up for tomorrow. We made some changes this afternoon, which ironed a few things out. Even though I’m on pole again, I’m expecting it to be a tough race tomorrow, so I’ll try to get a good start and see how it goes from there. My overall objective is to regain my championship lead from Michael Laverty so things are going according to plan so far.” Jonathan Rea: “This has been a mixed day for me. On a positive note, I’ve got a great race set-up and feel that I’ve achieved the best race package of the year so far. I’ve worked really hard with the team who have helped get me into this position. However, I feel a bit disappointed because my grid position doesn’t really reflect the effort that has gone into this weekend. I’m still learning how to get the best from a qualifying tyre but my confidence is high and tomorrow can’t come soon enough.” Qualifying times: 1. K. Harris (HM Plant Honda Racing) 1:17.614; 2. M. Llewellyn (Ducati) 1:17.877; 3. S. Andrews (Yamaha) 1:17.975; 4. P. Riba (Kawasaki) 1:18.088; 5. M. Laverty (Ducati) 1:18.115; 6. C. Jones (Triumph) 1:18.124; 7. L. Quigley (Suzuki) 1:18.251; 8. P.
